What is better, Digital 8 or MiniDV?

Looking to get a new camcorder (digital)...and wondered if there were any experienced film people here.

Technically they are the same (quality wise) but Mini-DV is the way to go since Digital8 is Sony proprietary.

The more populare format is miniDV. The only reason Digital8 exist is because of the 8mm transformation. Both, gives the same performance (digital). If you don't have any 8mm tape, get a MiniDV cam.

i have a sharp hi8mm right now, but the darn thing records the tape sound...aarrrgh, and would like a digital out file instead of going through a video capture card...what is the format of the file that comes out....is it mpeg2?

minidv although im considering the new sony that writes directly to dvd has anyone seen any review or own one?

If you capture it out from firewire it to your computer it will be a .avi file. You get roughly 3minutes for 700mb so have plenty of space. This is in its more raw form but you can encode to whatever.

cool...all those big a$$ hard drives that i have will pay off and so will that dvd pioneer burner!

i think the dvd one stores the video with mpeg2. if you want to edit your videos, that is not a good beginning format to work with as it is compressed. minidv is "uncompressed" and will be a much better format to edit from.
