one reasion he says is he thinks pentium is more reliable. (by the way this all the Pentiums P1 P2 P3 ....) but I think that the only diference is price

lately, it has been AMD. the athlon is inexpensive and more or less the same speed as an equivalent p3, but the athlon is available at 1.2 GHz whereas the p3 is only up to 1 GHz. the athlon is usually faster than a p4 at 1.5 GHz, but is slightly slower in quake3. of course you can build a whole athlon system for what you can buy just the p4 processor for. right now multiprocessing for athlon is unavailable, so the p3 is better for that.

edit: intel chipsets seem to have less issues than chipsets for amd products. but thats a platform issue, not the processor itself.

oh please...not again....please stop... :p

my opinion...amd
but intel has its place also. tell him to buy whatever he wants to and forget about it.

In terms of chips, Amd is not only cheaper, but also has equal, if not sometimes faster, performance.

But in terms of chipsets, everyone would agree with me that the athlon chipsets can be a *little* more problematic than the intel BX chipsets.

<< Perhaps he is GUTB? :Q >>

Bwhahahahaha... Errr... does he hang around here also? I've only seen him in the FS messageboards.

Actually my MSI K7T Pro is rock stable compared to my old LX (Yes I know it`s not a BX but it`s Intel) board I had, so I would go with AMD as the better of the two right now.

Athlon also runs much hotter than Petiums. Palomino then says, "We'll see about that." ;)

A long time ago, in a galaxy... ;) Intel ruled but lately it seems that AMD is putting one over the former "monopoly". ;)

Right now I favour AMD solely due to price/performance, but a P3 is an excellent CPU as well.

More bang for your buck if you go with AMD. But pentiums are just easier to deal with although you can't overclock the higher megahertz procs as well as you can similar AMD procs.

I agree with Topochicho...tubes are where it's at, the only trouble is that finding support can be a real B*!@#. I am sick of people using "reliability" as the defense for the intell chips. How many recalls and problems have they had with their chips over the last several years? TONS! Intell is ALWAYS releasing chips before they are ready.

GUTB is banned from both FS and AT messageboards. He still hangs around the FS newsgroups.

AMD all they way at least thats what i have heard...and since there not so big but truely they are big they don't get a whole lot of credit. They are alot cheaper but you get more mhz or gigabityes more than ever. So i would go with the AMD even though your friend has his mind set on the brand name! :)
