Aye. GeForce4 MX is pretty much a GeForce2 in terms of features and performance. There's no reason to buy the GF4MX, even at $39.99.

And you'll probabaly want a card that at least supports DirectX9 since that is what those games will be using.

I understand that he doesn't want to spend a lot of money, but I don't understand your choices of video cards given the games he wants to play and the fact that he wants an upgrage in performance and quality.

Please help me understand your choice on the GF4MX, cuz I just don't get it.

Buying GF4MX is a waste of money if your friend wants to play those games.

I'd grab a GeForce4-Ti4400. I had one and it was great! And, you can overclock it to Ti4600 speeds or more!:)

well my logic behind getting that card was....

His current card is a GeForce 2 64mb and probably 32-bit or 64-bit....so if I got anything with 128-bit memory interface (either 128mb or 256mb), wouldn't the performance be better? Considering the memory is higher? or am i sadly mistaken?

Remind your friend that you cannot upgrade video hardware on nickels and dimes and expect to play modern games at 'reasonable' settings. Getting that MX440 is hardly any upgrade, infact, it may end up slower; a GF4MX was just a GF2MX if I remember correctly, which is actually a downgrade from his current GF2GTS. Get him to throw down just ~10-20 dollars more or look around for used and you will get tremendously better performance. Used Ti4200, used 9700pro or 9800pro would be your best bet.

Tell him that I'll sell him my 9500 non-pro (soft-moddable to a 9700 pro) after I get my new card in a couple weeks. It even already has an NV Silencer installed.

It plays WoW right now at 1280x1024 and looks very pretty to me. Also plays CS:S really well.

Sorry to say that you were sadly mistaken. A complete waste of money. Your friend will not be happy. Get a refund or exchange it for a "better" card.

NAB,RETURN THE MX440!
It is a geforce2 that nvidia renamed. same functions, around same speed.

ignore hans. a 6600 is nowhere near 9800pro speed, it's around 9600 speed and oced, it might reach 9700pro speed with a awesome oc.

To be able to play WOW, you need at least ti4600 or a 6600 card at any decent settings. Buy a used 9600xt. you wont regret it.

mwmorph, my 6600 blew away any 9600 and ran strong by 9700 Pro, so I don't know what you are talking about. You just have to buy one with good stock speeds, mine was 450/500.

yeah, thats then a stock oc. Im talking about a normal 6600. 300mhz core, 500mhz memory, reference design, 8pipe 3vs. IO checked futuremark's orb(maybe 6 months ago) and there were very few 6600s that could keep up with a 9700pro.(only a few showed up oced enough to beat the 9700pro with a average oc)

The Geforce2 gts uses the same 128bit memory interface that the Geforce4mx does. Like I said, they are basicly the same card. Regardless, a Geforce4mx is hardly a card for playing anything close to modren games.

The ti4200 is an awesome card for that price. Theyre pretty solid performers just dont expect any shader action out of them and youll be happy.

The Ti4200 at $40.00 is a great buy for him. It kicks the MX440's ass six ways from Sunday. It only supports DirectX8, but at 40 bucks there's no reason not to buy it over the MX440.

BUY THE TI4200 CARD. END OF DISCUSSION
