What is best nVidia-based card for 2D (not 3D)? I don't run games on the machine that needs the card; 2D performance simply has to be clear, clean on a 17" CRT, nothing fancy with a refresh rate of at least 75.

Must be an nVidia based chipset. Suggestions?
Thank you in advance.

 Well it would make a LOT more sense to get a Radeon or Matrox card for this, but if you really want nVidia the GF4MX would be your best bet, pref manu'd by Gainward or Leadtek as they were widely regarded as the best image quality for the GF2/3 cards. GF4TI have better image quality still, but then they are priced according to their 3D ability and wouldn't be worth the added cost if you aren't interested in 3D. GF4MX have hugely better IQ than any GF2 or GF3 cards, so if you must choose nVidia then GF4MX is certainly where it's at considering your req.

I would go for a GF4 model in that case.Leadtek,Gainward are the top 2 on image quality, however the image quality with the other GF4 brands is very close.

Is there a reason why you would only consider nvidia? It seems counter-intuitive, since you don't run games on the machine, and games are what nvidia cards excel in. Then you say you want 2D performance and clear image quality, which nvidia is relatively poor at compared to say ATI and Matrox.

Most nvdia cards have very good tv, you just need to ask people that have owned them;) Of the 7 or so nvdia cards i have had the best is tied between my current inno3d and my elsa gts.

 Well nVidia cards have cheap and cheerful TVout. The GF4 cards have enhanced it a little in that the dual RAMDACs mean that you can have simultaneous use of TV and monitor and the nVidia Dets should recognise the TVout chip which are now a little more standardised although still 3rd party implimentations. You still don't get any standard tweaking apps to centre the image, remove the inch of black border let alone more exquisit settings ... the annoying thing is that these things are easily implimented simply with sw and nVidia still can't be bothered! Even when tweaked (eg TV-Tool) nVidia cards' TVout is still inferior to ATI's. nVidia do more than passable TVout and VIVO on their gfx cards and they do so for a very cheap price ... but pretty it certainly isn't!

;) The same goes for image quality, GF4 cards are hugely better than GF2 and GF3 cards but if you often work in res as high as 1600x1200x32 @ 75Hz+ then an ATI or better still Matrox are generally a better bet so long as you can live with less 3D ability or else fork out for the Rad9700.

 Even if 3D isn't important it's still worth paying the extra $5 for the GF4MX440 over GF4MX420, the 3D diff is significant given the tiny price diff.
