What is basic training like?

From day 1 to day whatever...

Particularly Air Force basic.

I'm not a particularly physical person, but I'm wondering if it's something I can survive.

I love how people think that the Air Force basic training is so trivial, and that everyone in th Air Force is a wus... You prolly couldn't make it through! And I'm not really getting defensive for my sister....or my sister's fiance...or my other 4 friends that joined....

There is a reason that our military is the most powerful in the world....

Every see the movie full metal jacket? Remember the basic training sequence in that movie and how nice that drill instructor was? It will be nothing like that. 🙂

what about the army? is it as bad as it shows on TV?

When I went through Army Basic Training, it was just like Full Metal Jacket. Of course, the Drill Sergeant would be balls to the wall first thing in the morning every morning, then as the day progressed, he gradually lightened up. By the end of the day, he was actually cracking jokes with us. But at 5 a.m. the next morning, he was the Tasmanian Devil again.

You run everywhere, but when you're not running, you're marching. You have to do pushups all the time, but that wasn't so bad. The thing that really sucked was not having any shred of privacy for two months.

It's not all that bad, as a matter of fact, it's one of those things that you are really proud of accomplishing when you're done.

smartbombs?
And what branch uses them?

ROTFLMAO!!! you guys are great 😀

no disrespect for AF, they are cool, some friends i know based in Alaska during the 80s.

All right you want to know the truth? Basic training is not all that difficult it's all a mental game to get you prepared for possible hardships and to learn a little discipline as for the Air Force "basic training" it's pretty much fat camp for pretty boys.

We had a couple of guys that couldn't when we got to Basic. Trust me, you'll get really good at them!

I would like to add that after the initial couple of days, you spend pretty much all day in a classroom going to all kinds of classes. The Drill Sergeant still gets you over meals, and before and after class.

I recommend any of the Armed Forces to anyone who can get it, and it's not that easy nowadays. I'm going to beg, bribe and steal (so to speak) to get my son to join one of them, even if it's for the minimum time so he can have that character building experience if at all possible.

just make sure you pick the right job... right now I'm sitting Iraq and posting on ATOT. My first job was demolitions but after a couple of years I realized that there is alot better jobs.

My cousin went through basic last fall in the Air Force. He was a very fit, healthy, rock climber going in, and HE said that it was tough as hell. I believe his first hand account over anyone elses.

Unfortunately, basic training is no longer as mentally challenging now as it once was. Did you know that recruits now have a "time out" card? When they feel that they are being pushed too hard, they give their drill instructor one of these cards and they get a break. You could even use this card if you're being screamed in the face by the SGT. Gunnery Sgt. Hartman from Full Metal Jacket would be fired and courtmartialed in today's military. I think you're allowed to use 1 per day.

This is no joke either (I work for the Army)

I think the instructors have other ways to deal with those "time out cards". 😀 You would prolly be singled out for anything and everything...

You went through it?

No I am in the Army. But when I was "reclassifying" (changing jobs) we had air force recruits with us. Their PT test consists of pushups, situps, and a STATIONARY BIKE ride! They are by far the most relaxed of the Armed Forces which may not be a bad thing (at times). Just make sure you pick a job that you'll like (not that you'll ever actually do the job you signed up for).

Okay, so on average, how many pushups/situps/miles would you do in a day of basic?

Depends on your age. Of course, you'll get lots of practice, but when you do the PT test, you will have to do something like ~45 proper pushups in two minutes, ~50 proper situps in two minutes, and run the two mile run in ~17 minutes. That's approximate, but you get the idea. It's not too hard after Basic.

If you're asking how many you may do in a day, I couldn't even begin to tell you, probably 100 or more per day, of course you're doing them 10 or 20 at a time, and the drill sergeants work you to total muscle failure so they know you can't do them all. If you do what they say, (and you'll have little choice in the matter, haha) you'll pass the PT test with no problems, trust me.

EDIT: These are Army standards btw, and are a couple of years old. It still should be fairly close to what you can expect.

I think I must be crazy even contemplating it. I'm a 26 year old father of 3 wondering whether I'm going to be able to keep a roof over my family's head. Of course from what I'm told, since I have a 4 year degree I'd be an officer going in fwiw.

Having a 4 year degree doesn't mean you automatically go in as an officer. I went in with a 4 year degree, but I had to go to OCS after a couple of years. In the Army, you must enlist, sign a contract, complete Basic and AIT, then you can apply for OCS. In the A/F and other branches, it's different, but you still have to apply and be accepted for Officer training, and be aware that they intentionally make the washout rate very high. I started with over 125 people in my OCS class and we graduated about 60. I'm not saying you can't do it, but you must definitely be prepared for the worst. OCS made Basic look like a walk in the park!
