Cheap is, what cheap does. Your onboard mobo sound might be a bit better. You get what you pay for and the SE version is just that.
When you go up to Audigy 2 ZS Platinum for $100 and pair that with some really good speakers, then you'll will hear the difference.
There are other sound cards that offer other things, but that's your choice.

Well, onboard always has a fairly large mountain to climb vs PCI due to higher noise levels. So, I don't think you will be losing anything by going to the Audigy, but, the question is are you disatisfied with your onboard?

Its a piece of arse because it has no hardware support for eax. It Its does eax3/4 in software.

The SE does not sport the EMU10K2 DSP of the normal Audigy series but rather the cheaper CA0106-DAT, nor does is seem to include any licensed decoders, thereby saving more moolah, and finally the connectivity is limited so it is most akin to the Live! 24-bit and Audigy LS, and indeed may amount to just another rename of that product. In the same price range I recommend the Audigy 2 Value instead which can be had for $35 via eBay, or else perhaps a used Audigy 2 ZS.

I think its (SE) better than most onboard sound setups. The Audigy2 ZS or Plat edition is a better choice. Prices are well below $100 now. If you must have the best then the X-Fi is the top of the line as far as Creative products go. If you just want a cheap Audigy2 setup go with the ZS edition.
