What is attempted murder really?

Well I was watching the simpsons episode with Bob in it when he said

"Really, Attempted Murder, thats like having attempted chemistry Noble peace prize" or something along those lines.

Why is there a charge called attempted murder and how does it hold up? Is there an attempted Music award or anything like that?

Please excuse my rambling if it makes no since, I have weird ways of thinking.

Attempted murder is the charge for the case when you have done something to someone else with the intent of killing them, but failed.

If I shoot you in the face, but you make it to the hospital and live, I would likely be charged with attempted murder.

your rambling makes no sense.

if they gave out awards for second place in "chemistry" or "music" , i'm sure there would be an attempted nobel prize or something like that.

in a CRIME, even attempting the crime is a crime.. so no shit there's gonna be "attempted robbery" or "attempted murder"

Exactly. It is worse than assult or battery. If, instead of shooting the OP in the face, I punch the OP in the face with my fist, I would likely be charged with assult. If I beat the OP's face in with a lead pipe, that would likely be attempted murder. The real question is "was the aggressor trying to kill the victim, or simply hurt them?"

Between this and your guitar thread, I'm thinking you need to work on your trolling skills a bit more before you try again.

I don't believe I am trolling but if I need any advice I will come to you.

Anyways, back to the topic. So what attempted murder is then would be like excessive assault or assault with the intent to kill or both?

lets see... i poison you, but don't use enough poison.. you live.

i dont think this is "excessive assault" or "assault with the intent to kill"

i tried to KILL you. No two ways around it.

i failed.

i'm a stupid criminal... i go to jail for ATTEMPTED murder.

are you really this stupid?

The thing with attempted murder is somebody tried to cause grievous bodily harm to another. There's no intent to hurt anybody with attempted chemistry.

And my favorite Sideshow Bob quote is: "I hope they still make that shampoo I like."

The real tricky one is Attempted Manslaughter.

How can you try to accidently kill someone?

im driving down the road, answer my phone... drop my burger.
i go to pick up my burger, and you run into the street

i accidentally turn you into a hood ornament, which kills you

Attempted murder.

It's not a difficult concept.

In this case, why should the charge and punishment be any less than if the shot had killed? A couple inches to the left or not getting such a skilled doctor is the only difference.

The victim "caught a break" so, legally, you catch a break.

Attempted Murderers usually go away for 20-years to life anyways.. they're not getting a "lighter sentence" .. the only difference is they can be eligible for parole in 20-30 years.

You tell everyone you want to kill someone. You buy a gun to do it. You then accidentally run them over with your car on the way over there to kill them. They live anyway. All your "friends" that you told this to tell the cops that you told them you wanted to kill that dude.

Yeah I dunno just a guess.

ATTEMPTED murder means you got lucky...or I fucked up in my attempt to kill you.

Some states have varying charges for attempted murder:

Assault with a deadly weapon,
Assault with the intent to kill,
First degree assault.
are just a few examples. All usually indicate that the person so charged assaulted a person with the intent to kill them.

You rarely shoot someone to hurt them...

This is one of the stupidest questions I've ever seen asked here. Stop letting cartoons do your thinking for you.
