What is Asus Chromebox?

Okay, I found my answer on the webpage. The website says it supports wireless keyboard and mouse. Blah.. If it was controlled by my phone, I would have purchased it.

hp came out with one that i think is better, asus is know for making junk. the only advantage of the asus one is that it is available as i3. if anyone has a chromebox tell us how it is

Asus has two ram slots. HP only has one. Therefore Asus is better. Both have the same gut. HP is slightly more compact and comes in several different colors if that's your thing.

Amazon has the HP Chromebox for $149. Newegg has the Asus Chromebox for $159 after $10 rebate. Newegg is also offering $20 gift card with the Asus which makes the effective price $140. That is crazy good deal. 90% of i3 performance and comes with SSD, RAM, 2.4 and 5ghz wifi, gigabit Ethernet, HDMI, Displayport, and 4 USB 3.0. Asus also comes with VESA mount so you can mount to back of your monitor or TV. HP does not.

I have both Chromecast and Roku. I use Chromecast with my Android phone and Roku for Amazon prime because Chromecast does not support Amazon Prime. Does Asus Chromebox combine the functionality of Chromecast to beam my phone to the TV and Amazon prime?

Desktop Chrome OS?

Thats fine for special uses, but not as a main replacement.
It would be great for libraries, no one could install crazy windows programs.
Good for gramma. Kids. Coffee Shops if they would prefer to have limited computers instead of anyone using their laptop on the wifi.

Unless you really need to mirror a chrome browser window, I don't know why anyone would use a Chromecast over the Roku if you already have a Roku.

A Chromebox is the best XBMC appliance ever made.

I was going to say something really similar:

"It's a bad PC but great HTPC."

I have thought about getting one for desktop use by my 9 year old. I wouldn't consider for any kind of PC use outside of accessing Google Docs and Web Browsing.

Built in 16GB SSD is really quick and 2GB is plenty for anything mentioned so far.

I'm thinking about ordering a second one. I've two spare 21" LCD monitors. I could attach to one so when my nephews come over they can play the web Flash games on it instead of my desktops. I'm worried one of them is going to download a virus on my Win7 machines.

I have Roku stick.

It comes down to convenience. It's just way easier to use my Android phone as a remote to beam something to the TV, than finding the remote that comes with the Roku. Roku stick also has a slow response time and will sometimes freeze when using the remote. In addition to that, I don't like holding both my remote and cell phone while watching TV. Roku does have an Android app but it will often disconnect.

I only use Roku when there is something on Amazon Prime that I can't find free anywhere else. I buy all my movies and TV shows from google play for the ease of use. The functionality of an Android phone with Chromecast just can't be beat.

wait what was the company that made the nexus 7 and all those other junk tablets and laptops...yeah im thanking of asus...

You mean the company that built one of the top rated and highest selling Nexus tablets?

Asus usually makes decent stuff, far more so usually than HP. I have the Asus 2955U Chromebox on one of my TVs, but I don't use it very often.

Hardly.

The Fire TV can't even do 23.97fps, yet and the ARM CPU gets smoked by the Chromebox's Haswell based Celeron.

I'm not sure what you're talking about. My AFT rooted and running XBMC is as smooth as butter.

Do you have some sources on how the AFT "can't even do 23.97"? I'm just curious.

By that logic the Roku box (or Kindle TV) would be the best, because it's even cheaper and smaller and handles XBMC/Plex just fine.

He said the best XBMC appliance. There is no Roku XBMC. FireTV lacks the power to properly run XBMC and has Android ARM incompatibility issues.
