I am building a computer for an uncle and I am trying to find a fairly fast cd-rom that isn't so damn loud. I have been looking mostly at toshiba, teac, and asus drives. Unfortunately I have had a hard time finding them at some of my favorite online stores. Are there any other drives that you would recommend. It doesn't have to be very fast but the main thing is that it is quiet. I would like to have at least 32x though. I want to see what I can get for about $50 shipped since I am trying to make the computer for $1100. Thank you.

I recently picked up a Toshiba 48x from PC Heidens for $44. It's a very nice, quick, and quiet drive. One of the best CD-ROM drives I've ever used.

Yes, Toshiba makes a quality CDROM. I use them in system builds as well as the Sony 48x IDE :)

The ultimate in quiet is obviously the Kenwood Multibeam series, but they're pretty expensive. I've had good luck with Toshibas, too.

Wingznut...

PC Heidens? No sh~t... That's where I buy 90% of my stuff. Pat can be pretty abrupt at times, but I've always gotten excellent service from them.

Ok, I have the same basic question but added to it is which CD Rom drive does all the above (Quiet, Reliable, Fast) and also Rips audio CD's at a fast DAE? My CD ROM works great and fast for data but it's slow on doing DAE. I want a fast CDROM that is also fast doing DAE and very reliable. Any suggestions??

How fast is fast for you? My Kenwood 72X does ~33X rips, & I've never gotten a bad rip from it. But it's also a $130 CD-ROM.

Viper, Fast to me is as fast as possible as I do a lot of Ripping. That 33x sounds great. Only thing is about the Kenwood, I have heard of a LOT of people having problems with the Kenwoods with the 6 beam pickup after say 5 or so months down the line. How long have you had yours and have you had any problems with it? I need DAE as fast as possible as I am converting most of my Audio CD's to MP3's for playing in a car MP3 player and I have a lot of CD's so a fast drive would make the job a lot quicker.

That price is not that bad for the DAE speed it delivers.

I've had mine for I dunno... 8 months or so? I haven't had any problems with it.
