What is after WinME and Win2000?

I've been using Win98, and Win98SE for ages now, and I didn't really want to upgrade to WinME (cos of all its problems and cruddy "User-Friendliness&quot😉 or Win2000 (I like my games!) so I was wondering if anyone knew when Microsoft plans to release its next big OS upgrade?

I'm talking Operating System that is the combination of WinME and Win2000 in terms of performance and stability, as well as ability to play games and multimedia friendliness.

Wlll... you will allways have the problem with some Operating systems supports something and othres support other things. If you need them all, why not use 2 or more OS'es. I use windows 2000 and Linux allthougt my Linux box is dead right now.

It r0xx having more than 1 OS.

personally, i just use Win2K. Although I'm not a power user and a hard-core CS fan, I enjoy the stability and CS runs just fine.

Whistler = .net 1.0. It's consumer edition will be targeted for home use (ala Win9x/ME) while the other versions will replaces Win2K. I had read that a release date *may* be in '01. Beta 2 is already floating around.

why does it seem microsoft is cramming new OSs down our throats so fast? new software is always a good thing if it works but it seems so sudden.

I don't know about it beeing totalt new. We got Windows Me edtion rather quickly, and I don't like it. Well I don't think that Whistler is going to be something special...

Just my 2 cents.

whistlers gui is definitely different. i think that will draw in some people. i mean...you stick a new interface on anything, add a new and improved sticker on it and some people will go for it. microsoft is doing a good job right now in pummeling the market with a whole bunch of OSs right before OSX comes out. i actually read an interesting article linked off of slashdot about microsoft being able to take the lead in the open source market if it ever wanted to do so...heres a link:

Whistler will have these version:

Personell
Professional
server
Advanced server

some will be 32 bit and there may be a 64 bit pro version as well.

Going from 32 to 64 bit should make some difference.

Whistler will be a single platform (NT kernel) meaning no more dos!

Well I don't think that Microsoft is able to lead the Open Software market... The marked rules because there is sow many programmers that write software.. Microsoft can't have sow many of their employers to do that kind of word because they also need to make money.
