I have a new HP Pavilion laptop with XP Home on it and if it's plugged into the network the hard drive will seek at least once every second. It's really annoying and none of the other systems on the network do it.

What's even more annoying about it is that it's not even random. Usually it's click...click..click...click-click.
It's the only noise in the room except for when the CPU fan turns on. The fan sounds like what I imagine the FX5800 sounds like. ARGH!

The only software I have installed on the system so far is KISS Pinball and the regular disk access does not happen when the system isn't plugged into the network.

This is not General Hardware related.

Do you have any filesharing or network communcation programs installed that may be requesting or sending data? Try putting up a firewall and see if that helps.

I'll have to look, but there shouldn't be any. Except for the one game, the system is pretty much as I received it from HP. It's behind a NAT system, too.

I figured that there might be something funky that HP does to their systems that somebody here would know about...

Install a firewall product like ZoneAlarm and see if some program is accessing the net.
