Hello guys, at the moment I am questioning what I should do for my future. I have been thinking about this for along while and I have decided to become a lawyer. When I choose that, I thought the pay was very high; I am not so certain of that anymore. I like to draw architectural drawings, like Drafting drawings; I like talking in front of alot of people although I get nervous at that at times; I also like to learn about computers and use them, although I have little or no computer knowledge at the moment.

The only two jobs I thought about being were:
-Draftsmen
-Lawyer

I am in my junior year at high school (11th) and I am still confused on my future. Thanks for your input ladies and gentlemen.

don't do it for the money... toys aren't worth you spending your life doing something you hate

by all means, make enough to be comfortable -- just don't shoehorn yourself into a profession just because it's high-paying

become an engineer and then an engineering manager later in your career. as an engineer you will earn a good salary out of college (50k+) and engineering managers make a median salary of 105k.

That is true. Sorry for the obsession of money. I am just skeptical about the future. I don't want to be in an average home or live in a box :(. No one whats that.

It's much better to be happy in a small house than lonely in a large house. Any decently skilled job is going to get you enough money to live on.

Stay out of highly political job posistions. This includes a highly responsible job at a major fortune 500 company.

Not unless you have the balls for it.

You see, I realized that no one really likes me so I became independent. I have been like that for a year now and it has worked like a charm. I would be happy in a big house. I want to be success of the family instead of the average guy in the family.

wtf is "average"?

possessions? please, sorry to come off harsh but you'll quickly learn once you finish school that having a big house or fancy car doesn't make you "above average" when it comes to quality of life if you're miserable 9+ hours of the day working at a career you hate.

Money's relative. I don't make 100,000 a year, but there's nothing I need that I don't have, or have the means to come by. You might also weigh risk / reward. How much would law school cost? Say you don't graduate. You're out all that jack while Bobby Joe, who got a job as a trash truck driver right out of high school, won't have to pay anything back.

I'm not saying sell yourself short, I'm just echoing the sentiments of others. Find something that interests you and do it. Drafting is a good job. I have a couple friends who did that and they make a good living.

I was being serious. I love going to work each day worrying about how my ass will get chewed out for something I didn't do.

My suggestion is to get into college and try as many things there as you can, this is what a lot of GE classes can do for you. Find something you like to do and a way to apply it in some kind of occupation. The people who are the best at something always get paid well (ok well not all the time), so just be the best at whatever you like to do.

I am a lawyer. Trust me, do not do it for the money alone. My main reason for going to law school was all about autonomy. I am not great at taking orders but more importantly I wanted to have the ability to schedule my life as I want.
My family is the most important thing in my life and I don't want to miss anything with them because my boss has me running TPS reports.

edit: BTW the best job in the world is one that you love so much that you would do it for free. Find that occupation for yourself and you will be content.

dont' listen to people who say 'don't do it for the money'. They have a slight point, yes, that you shouldn't do a job you HATE for the money. But doing something you like somewhat, for good money, well that's not bad. You can enhance your life more outside of work with a good paying average job, than a low paying job you like. To me work has never ever ever ever ever ever affected my life so much that I'd work a job I loved for extremely low pay.

Maybe this is why no one likes you.

BTW, if you want to make a lot of money and not spend much time in education be a plumber.

Do something you like and are fairly confident you will be good at. It isn't about what job you have but how good you are at that job. /thread
