Yes, humans can hear well below 20hz.
Some speakers/subwoofers have a crossover which reduces the volume of the low frequencies.
Typically they do this at the same frequency as the speaker is ported, if it is ported.

Let me clarify one thing:
Almost any speaker will play very low frequencies, just not very loudly.
You need a subwoofer to play them at the same relative level as the other frequencies.
To get down to 20hz at the same level as a typicall home speaker system, you need a LOT of swept air ( cone area time how far it moves in and out), like maybe 6 12" drivers or more.
Also, the larger or more drivers you have, the more efficient the system, and the fewwer watts it requires.

Ok... don't listen to everyone on here... they're playin' games with ya!

The word "subwoofer" has two references in the English language:

1) An organism of the canine genus that has had a declination in its ability to create vocal sound waves, or has had its vocal cords stretched due to disease or misuse and hence vocalizes at a lower pitch (i.e. sub-woofer)
2) A elongation of the posterior region of a standard submersible (e.g. Submarine) in which when travelling at higher speeds (in nautical miles) an intermittent whirring sound is created most often referred to as a "woof"

Hope this helps - don't know if you can buy either one of the above. May want to check eBay :)

Ever heard loud sounds and hearing the wall rumble when your parents bedroom door is closed? Thats what it does.

Most common speaker systems are two or three way designs with one or more drivers used in each range, but reproducing bass requires substantial mass, so some smaller speaker designs do put out enough bass. This is OK in a small apartment, but if you want to fill a large space with kickass bass, a subwoofer with a separate amplifier is one way to do it.I'm glad a couple of other guys had the courtesy to give OIKOS a straight answer, among the jokers. :p
I would substitute rigidity and cone displacement for mass in your statement.
