Actually, i kinda have an inkling of what a secret clearance is (i'm guessing they do background checks?), but does anyone know where to get one? It seems a lot of these government contracted jobs require one...

Usually the company will do all of the paperwork in order to get the clearence. You can't just walk in to a government agency and say"I would like to order a secret clearence".

I believe a local and national records check dating back 10 years is required for a secret clearence. I may be off, but not by much.

If you are interested in those jobs, contact the prospective company and see if they require a secret clearence or if they requeire that you get one after being hired.

When I was in the Army, (which, granted, was a couple thousand years ago), I had a secret clearance. Frankly, the BI was surprisingly sloppy. I would hope that they are more careful and thorough these days.

I did the app for Secret Clearance about 4 years ago. It was pretty in depth for me. had to have like to total of 15 references (like three from each place you have lived: surrounding neighbors and the like). had to find my selective service number, all family members, ages, spouses, (immediate family like brothers and sisters). it was pretty extenstive and took a while to fill everything out.

The application was also extensive when I was cleared. The problem was that they investigated very little of the information provided, and talked to only a couple of the references.

When I got my clearence in 94, they talked to everyone on my list plus some people that my references mentioned. It took quite a bit of time and I was interviewed 3 or 4 times. My clearence was a little different than a secret clearence though.

When I got my Top Secret with access to special intelligence clearance, back in '73, I was investigated quite completely. The FBI interviewed people I didn't think they knew about. Fortunately, it was all good. :)

aahhh that is what you meant. i read your post in the wrong way. yeah they didn't really do much of a background on me either. i don't even think they talked to anyone except my former employers and supervisors.
