What is a relatively recent good RPG with gorgeous graphics and solid gameplay?

I have never tried my hand at RPGs before being tricked into acquiring and playing System Shock 2. I say tricked because someone, many someones, led me to believe it was a fps.
It really isn't.
So after my bumpy intro into the world of RPGs I have to say I MAY start to like that form of gaming, as I'm really into SS2, despite its dated graphics which, when played at high resolutions, actually hold up well. But I am, above all, a graphics junkie so I admit my ability to be immersed in a game is partly dependant on how pretty it looks. I'm shallow that way. So what good RPGs are available now, new or old, that have great story and gameplay elements and are also very cool to look at? Thanks!

Yeah Deus Ex has great gameplay. The graphics are decent - certainly not great by today's standards, but the level design and artwork are top notch, so overall it looks nice.

Morrowind is nice looking, far more on the RPG side, compared to Deus Ex being more toward the FPS. Very nice environment though, and just bloody huge in terms of freedom of movement. I got bored of the lack of skill needed in the fighting though, even though it is first person, it feels a little like the old style RPG, click on enemies until they die.

Neverwinter Nights is great, especially fun questing in multiplayer with a friend. Looks really slick too and runs well.

Morrowind is fun and looks pretty good, but it's very very open-ended. It's not linear in the least sense of the word, you can do what you please. Some people enjoy that, some don't.

Hmm...RPGs usually have pretty uninspiring visuals, so if you're hooked on graphics your foray into the world of role-playing may be over before it even gets started. Morrowind is by far the best looking of the bunch, but it also happens to be a pretty hardcore RPG. Going from a System Shock 2 or Deus Ex type RPG/FPS hybrid to Morrowind would be quite a severe transition (from one end of the RPG spectrum to the other), so research the game before spending money on it or you could quite possibly be disappointed.

Yes, I'm one of those that doesn't enjoy that very much, which is probably why I got bored very quickly with the freedom in GTA3 but actually enjoyed Mafia very much, in spite of their similarities, the latter being much more linear in story.

It looks like Morrowind has the superior graphics - thanks nohr, for the screenshots btw - but as exp suggested, it's probably too big a leap for me coming from SS2.

I guess I'll give NWN a try....thanks all🙂

NWN is also a big change (although I still recommend it). mmm...haven't played it on my new system yet. does it support Truform?

Well uh, NWN and Morrowind aren't ANYTHING like SS2. System Shock 2 is not really an RPG. It is an FPS with RPG style character developement. It still requires lots of FPS-esque skill. Morrowind requires very little skill... which is actually the reason I stopped playing it late in the game. And NWN isn't anything near an FPS.

While I enjoyed all 3 of the above games, I figured I would give you a heads up as to what you are getting yourself into. I know plenty of people who enjoyed SS2 but do not play RPGs (and you may very well fall into that category). For people such as yourself, I would recommend games such as Deus Ex. Deus Ex is another FPS game with RPG elements.

Blending FPS skill with RPG character developement is usually a good recipe for success. But you won't find that many games that fall under this category yet.
