What is a reasonable punishment for being late to class in the morning?

I wouldn't think that making them miss the whole class is a very productive thing to do. Pull them aside after class, chastize them, and then issue a detention if it happens repeatedly.

Late to first period here = get off without a damn thing happening. It just so happens that there's some kind of imminent traffic problem EVERY FVCKING DAY that causes them to hold attendance until 8:00 at least. School starts at 7:30.

Oh, and skipping school here == out-of-school suspension. Get a day off for taking a day off

That was kind of my point.

Put them in a room by themselves with a box cutter, and tell them to write an apology in their own blood.

mock them for not having pubic/facial hair publicly and assure them that it will grow someday

So, umm, how would you know if they had pubic hair or not?

Depends on why they were late.

NONE of the alarms in my house went off. Parents note to prove it.

Excuses are irrelevant, every one has an excuse when they are late. Your late you pay the price. As long as the teacher is consistent, it sounds ok to me.

He asked

So what if you had a dire medical emergency

Well for my school...

2 unexcused tardies = 1 unexcused absense.
3 unexcused absenses = fail the course.

That being said, my english teacher gives us detention for being late + call home.

Kinda ridiculous cause traffic is crazy. I'm in front of the school at 7:00 (literally on the street directly in front of it). I get into the parking lot at 7:25. School starts at 7:25. Understandably, people started just getting out and walking across the street (jaywalking). We now have a cop who gives out $85 tickets for jaywalking 😛 (though thats more cause some kid went and got hit by a bus last year).

at our school, if we're late, we just go to the office, they give us a little tardy slip, we give it to the teacher, no harm done 🙂

a friend of mine kept coming in late for about 2 weeks; instead of coming in at 7:45AM, he kept coming in right before break at 12:00PM 😛

Some teachers are very strict with the whole being late then. I had some teachers enforce the "3 strikes and you're out" rule, some teachers take marks off, or some don't enforce it with punishments at all.

If I was a teacher, I'd probably take attendance 5 minutes into class, and if you're not there, you're absent or late if you come in any later

in my highschool, just about any kind of infraction was punished with a "jug" (judgement under god... my jesuit school's version of detention. after school, you had to go to the dean's office and were given a sentence and a peice of graph paper. you weren't allowed to leave until you had written the sentence over and over again, with each letter taking up one box on the graph paper, until every box was filled. for especially bad infractions -- cutting class, pulling out your penis in the middle of an assembly, etc -- multiple sheets were given to the student).

This is a school policy
