What is a PIII 733 likely to overclock to?

Will be buying it dirt cheap tommorow,£35 🙂 ,I wanted something a little faster but at that price I can't complain😉 ,I may sell it on a little latter.

Anyway the system that will be getting this CPU has Crucial PC133 CAS2 RAM on a Soyo 7VCA ,S370 with a VIA VIA 694X chipset.
I know the TNT2 in it will handle upto a 84MHz AGP bus.The CPU has the retail HSF atm.
And I know it needs a Vid card upgrade but it fast enough for my friend who borrows the PC😛

Don't expect much out of that cpu. I had one and it would only go to 135 fsb with the hardware I had in that machine. Of course, every situation is diff, I'm just saying not to get your hopes too high.

Maybe 825 MHz (150 MHz FSB) but I don't know how stable yours will be at that speed. I set my 733 up to that speed on a CUSL2 but it wasn't exactly much of a "tangible" difference, so I set it back to keep the PCI/AGP in spec.
 
Good thread, I have a 733 on a CUSL2 also, and was thinking of overclocking it, but I may just let it ride after reading this.
 
I have a P3-733 on a Tyan Trinity 400 (Via Apollo chipset). It's not a very good overclocking board so I only get to 770MHz (140 FSB). But I've heard of people hitting 825 regularly as long as their other components can take the 150 FSB.

I believe I'm limitted by my memory. I got my RAM at a time when PC133 wasn't very mature.

Well I hope I get better than that! ,I know he ran it at 143MHz bus I believe ,he wasn't able to go higher because his RAM was holding him back ,mine won't🙂.

Why not just give it a try? ,just increase your FSB in small steps(say 3MHz) until it is unstable than drop it down a step.
I wouldn't go above 150MHz though ,not without an image to fall back on ,incase your HDD gets corrupted

Sorry... I only run SETI on my work machines. But I'd guess that it would take about 6-7 hours for an average WU.
 
I have a 733EB that will run stably at 850 on both an ASUS CUSL-2C and on a TYAN Trinity 400 (133a) using an Asus Slotket. Like someone said, it's not really a noticeable delta.
 
Trust me that would make a noticeable difference to SETI🙂

I've been meaning to run it on my home machine along with my work machines but I usually use the home one to convert my avi anime's to vcd so I can watch them on my TV. It'll all change once I get my P4-1.6A within the week. I'll sure this will give me the processing power to do everything and some!

But I'll run a few WU's on my P3-733 to see the speed I get and let you know about it once I get the results. If anything, this will give me a small boost in the standings. 😉

Btw guys/girls I'm installing that PIII tonight so I'll let you know what it overclocks to latter 🙂 ,I'm hoping for at least 825MHz *crosses fingers*😉
 
Well its installed now ,with the RAM set to CAS2,Turbo,4way inter it managed 147MHz FSB ,funny thing is the bootup screen shows 814 MHz which is 148MHz FSB😕.Anyway it's a nice boost from the Cel 366@550 it had 😀

I had a quick go at going higher setting the CAS down 3 ,it got to windows at 847 MHz(154MHz FSB) but very shortly I got an illegal opp ,dunno if it was the RAM,CPU or Northbridge, I gave up at that point as I was running out of time.I may just test a bit more to see how high it'll go but I'll be leaving it at 147MHz to get the best performance out of the RAM.

That should cut SETI times down nicely 😀.............oh & of course improve gaming performance for him😉
 
I have a PIII 1000 at work on a 133 FSB (same as the 733) and it takes about 6:30 for a WU. I have a 933 at home and it does about a 6:50 WU.

I would guess the 733 would do around 8 hour WU's. Maybe 7:45 at best. my PIII 866 that I used to have in this PC (now 1GHz) would do about 7:15 WU's or so. I wouldn't expect much in overclocking from the 733 just because the mult. is locked, and it's already at 133 FSB.
 
I'm a little surprised your PIII's weren't a little faster,especially the 1GHz ,I once had a PIII 650@820 on a BX board,CAS2(126MHz FSB) it used to do most WU's in 7hrs

What chipset is that with?what CAS?

If you're refering to my PIII PC then it has a front intake fan & just the PSU fan exhausting ,it seems to run reasonable cool🙂 ,the cpu is about 5C cooler than the Cel 366@550 was, & that's with a HSF than nearly 1/2 the size!.The CPU stays in the low 40'sC ,I guess that's not too surprising as the CPU is only 11% overclocked.
Time to update my rig sig😉
