A patch cable is the one that you would use to connect a from a hub to a computer right aka straight though cable? A crossover cable would be used in connecting 2 computers directly together?

A patch cable is a short cable running from a router/switch to a patch panel. The cable running from a patch panel to your PC would be called your 'line' or 'drop'.

Patch cables also tend to be stranded, so they can withstand repeated flexion. Patch cables (because they are usually stranded), are also lossier then "in the wall" UTP.

Patch cables home-made with solid-conductor ("in the wall&quot😉 cable have better loss figures, but the conductors are prone to breaking (out of sight) and causing huge troubleshooting headaches.
