Benedryal (or its generic) is ingredient that makes you sleepy in some over the counter sleep aids like Tylenol PM or Advil PM. If you don't need the pain killer you can just take Benedryal to help you fall asleep.

Read Sun Tzu Art of War, and the related commentary. I'm reading a translation from Lionel Giles written in 1910. You can get it from Project Gutenberg. It wouldn't be a bad read, but the commentary gets tedious, and makes me sleepy.

I started working night shifts and I find it extremely hard to fall asleep when I get home after I finish at 7:00am. The act of driving even if it's only 5 minutes, and the fact that there's light out wake me up if I'm tired. Oddly, if I was getting up at that time I would be ridiculously tired but because I've been up I'm usually wide awake.

Would taking Benadryl every day (well 4 days in a row then stop for 4+ days) have any bad effects? I'm considering it.

melatonin works great for me also

If I have a full night of rest to be had (7.5 hours), taking 6mg of melatonin tends to work wonders for me. Usually not too many issues if I get a perfect 6hrs of sleep, but less than that (or waking at the wrong time in the sleep cycles) usually makes for a super groggy morning. 3mg is usually better for such a night but doesn't have enough of a knock-out effect if I'm too alert.

And 6mg sometimes results in some wild dreams.
Sometimes amazing, sometimes on the verge of terrible. A worthy gambit, imho. :D
A night of some bad dreams, though, tends to screw up my night of sleep as I often wake up.

Before turning to meds, make your bedroom dark. Tinfoil on windows works well for this.

Are you on grave 4 days, off 4 days? If so that is rough. It is important to keep a consistent schedule.

I use Tylenol PM, rarely, as a backup if I really need to get to sleep. I wouldn't recommend it regularly due to liver damage and grogginess.

My schedule is really sporadic, I can work 4 nights, have 3 days off, work 2 days 8 hours, 1 day 12, be off for 5 days, work 4 days 12 etc... there's not really any pattern to it. Normally they try to give decent time off between the nights/days though. The hardest shifts are the 12 hour days because I have to be there for 7am, well technically 6:45 to do a proper cross-shift hand over. Getting up early is rough. The 7pm-7am is actually much easier as I'm already up and fully awake, I just have to actually leave the house and show up. No getting up early, no alarm etc.

And yeah, I will definitely want to do something to get the room more dark. I'll probably get a pull down blind. Or I might just put up with it for the few months where it's actually bright that early. Since the majority of the year it's still pitch black at that time. Once I fall asleep then it does not matter.

My non-narcotic "sleeping pill":

Have a bunch of episodes of a show you know really well ready to go on a tivo (or have it cued in netflix). You have to know the show well enough to know what's going on without having to watch the screen.

Start an episode playing, close you eyes and lie down facing away from the TV. The volume has to be just right: not too loud to be disturbing and not too soft to make you strain to hear. Listen to the words and play back the video in you mind.

You'll be asleep before the first episode is over. I'm often out before the fist commercial break.
