Are there any other games along those lines, where you either get turns and then watch the action or where it is real time but you can pause and give orders? I really liked close combat, and I'm about to try combat mission games.

Also, whatever happened to the space flight sim/arcade games like all those star wars games and the wing commander games and freespace. I really liked those games, have any newer ones been made anytime recently? I noticed there is a ww2 plane game, i bet that will be cool.

Yeah, SS is pretty cool. Turn-based.

Rome: TW, is a hybrid. Turn-based movement on a large campaign map, but real-time close combat battles... yet, you can pause and give orders. In fact, be prepared to. Battle can be quite chaotic with several thousand troops.

Both Knights of the Old Republic are turn-based/real-time where you can pause. Of course there's oldies like the Baldur's Gates and even Neverwinter Nights too.

And then, there's the monster of all turn-based games... Civ.

Here's another vote for Silent Storm.
It's one of the best turn based strategy/action game in recent years.
You should definitely check it out.
You can probably get it for around $20.
