What is a good program to teach you how to type...

I currently type 52-55 WPM on average but I finger pick. I am curious as to what is a good program to learn how to type properly? I was hoping to increase my typing to around 80-85wpm while keeping the typing errors to a minimum still.

I learned using Mavis Beacon. At my very best I was over 100 wpm. That was years ago, I'm probably around 70-80ish now, no looking.

Same here. I learned how to do it on a typewriter at first. Back in the day when there was no MySpace and MTV played music videos.

Well, I currently finger pick without looking, but I will check out Mavis Beacon. (Is it still finger picking heh, I only use my two main index fingers to type.).

Well now we're going way back. When I first learned to type, it was on an olive green, 5000 lb typewriter with black paint on the keys so you couldn't look. We were convinced our typing teacher lived in her back room. She had a cot, for some reason, so it wasn't too far fetched.

Obese Typewriter laid the foundation. Mavis Beacon honed my skills. I am a product of my upbringing.

that's funny.. i learned the opposite... used mavis beacon in elementary school and learned to type without looking there.. then in high school i took typing and learned to type even faster.. i still have trouble with the numbers though..

D'oh!! beat me to it! Typer Shark rules. But I learned to type (correctly) in Keyboarding class in 10th grade. Prior to that, I knew where all the keys were but just used two fingers and pecked around for them. By the end of the semester I was cranking out 130wpm. I can sustain 115wpm these days, at least as of last week.

Just play a mmorpg that will get you to type really fast. Just dont forget abreviations dont work in the real world.

Mavis Beacon had a game where you drove as fast as you could, but each error you made a fly would splat on your windshield. Thus, you keep going until you can't drive anymore ...

I used Type to Learn (2 Learn?)... Helped me develop my speed, even though I type improperly, I can still go 110 wpm+ with 90% accuracy. 130+ would give me 70%+ accuracy.

Course, I just developed more thru ATOT, AIM, and Counterstrike .

HOTU is the best abandonware site. Has downloads for those two games (direct and torrent) as well as thousands of other classic games (System Shock 2!).

Heh, thats where I got up to the 50wpm mark finger picking. Back in the day when people usually only hit 40wpm typing and I was blowing em away finger picking without looking. Thank you mud PK heh
