Most Samsung flat panels are excellent. Dell's 17" is a Samsung panel so if you can snag one in one of their sales at dell.com accessory store, it's a good catch.

ok, now I've heard that viewsonic is coming out with some new ones, the VG700 line. check out

http://www4.tomshardware.com/display/02q2/020429/index.html

they supposedly have 15-20 ms response rates which basically allows them to display something like 70 frames a second which would make them perfect for games and dvds.

aside from that, I'd probably get the CTX PV 720a or ADI Microscan l712. The Solarism LM1711 is great in its brightness, but it isnt too great for videos. honestly though, I'd personally wait for better response times.

I've seen MOHAA and Renegade run on a Samsung SyncMaster 171S 17" and it did not look to bad at all.

hypeMarked, I've recently purchased two 15" LCD flat panels. My oberservations, FWIW. I bought a Hitachi CML153 for my mother in law, to run a system my younger daughter retired. I got the Hitachi as it has built in speakers, which will be good enough to play back the few Windows sounds she needs. I was very impressed w/ the vibrancy of the screen, as well as the build quality.

I also picked up a Samsung 151S for my older daughter, to take to college this fall. I bought the Samsung based on my experience and satisfaction w/ Samsung monitors, and favorable reviews. Only rub in the reviews as a bit of instability of the unit as it sits on a desk. A decent monitor; however I guess I'm going to need to play w/ it before I pan it, as it seems a bit washed out compared to the Hitachi. Prices were w/i a few dollars of each other.

I'd say from his ass. Some flat panels do suck for games, but there's a lot that are as good as CRTs for gaming.

Photo editing is actually one of the things LCD's are rather weak at.

Color accuracy on an LCD won't be nearly as good as on a CRT (LCD is physically limited to approx 24 bit color whereas CRT's are analog and can pretty much display as many colors as the human eye/brain can recognize). The CRT also has a contrast ratio of about 3000:1 whereas the newest best LCD's only have contrast ratios of up to 500:1.

I love my LCD but if I wanted to do lots of photo editing I would invest in a high end CRT.

If you work long hours at a mnitor, then an LCD is better for your eyes. If you are doing graphics work, then you should check once in a while on a CRT to see what the graphics actually look like. The colors display a bit differently on a crt, so you will want to check what your crt owners will be seeing on their monitors.

Well - it relates to the thread - NewEgg came through and FedEx delivered me a new ViewSonic VX900 today. It replaced a 19-inch Hitachi CM771. The installation and setup were a breeze in XP Pro - not even "new hardware found." The resolution is set at 1280x1024 at 32 bit, and it works perfectly. Text is sharper than the Hitachi, and of course, there is zero flicker. I did some basic work with a few color photos and no problem at all. Now I have to save up for another one for my backup system. :)

Aside from no radiation and no flicker, and better feeling eyeballs, the big plus here in Arizona (outside temp today 97) is the absence of heat!!! My computer room is going to be cooler. It is always the warmest room in the house.

It connected perfectly to my Radeon 8500 with the digital cable.
