So I just got my free annual credit report and decided to upgrade so I could see the score. It said my score is 670, which sounds good to me, but then it says "this means your credit risk is Poor".

If thats the case, what is a good score? I have never had any problems getting credit when I needed it.

* 750 or above - This is considered to be an excellent credit score. At 770 and above you can generally obtain the best lending rates.
* Between 700 and 750 - With 725 being the average score in the United States, this range is usually considered to be between very good and excellent credit, and can be looked at as the medium.

Once you go below a 700 score, however, it becomes difficult to categorize credit as good or bad.

* Between 650 and 700 - Considered very good credit, although some institutions may consider a score of 650 to be excellent credit. Again, this is specific to the industry and the target market the institution is after.
* Between 600 and 650 - A good credit score. Sometimes the minimum for ?good credit? is bumped up to 620, because this is generally considered the cutoff point for a prime rate loan. Lenders generally view people with scores between 600 and 620 to be a much higher credit risk.
* Below 600 - Lenders see you as a high credit risk. While you can still obtain loans and credit cards in this range, they will often be secured credit cards and loans at the highest interest rate. If you have a score below 600 you are generalized as someone with having credit problems and probably have open credit problems that need to be addressed.
* Below 550 - Any FICO score below 550 is considered to be awful credit (multiple bankruptcies, loan defaults, past-due accounts, judgments against, etc.)

670 is fairly typical for a young person without a long credit history. At 27, mine is about 760, with no debt except a mortgage, constant use of credit cards that I pay off every month, and a few completed car loans behind me.

might be in relation to your income or possibly the amount of outstanding debt you've incurred.

in order to tell we need more info, i.e. how much debt you've got versus what your yearly income is.

ah, reminds me to get my credit report.

They ask too much for that score and comes with signing up for all sorts of BS. How much did you pay for the score OP?

Sounds to me like it's one of the new VantageScores. Not FICO, and cannot be compared to traditional FICO (which is why 670 is poor, in FICO it would be much better).

For the uninformed

Well... my FICO was 790. Thats before I bought my house. Has probably gone down since I've made the purchase. Fortunately though that let me qualify for the best mortgage options out there. The cut off for these rates was 750. So I'd say anything above 750 is excellent.

Yet you can't afford a hotel in San Diego.

good credit doesn't equate to having money, just means you've paid off what you've bought timely and in sufficient volume to enhance your score

Your FICO credit score is 803

Age 25. I have a car loan with about 12k left and student loan with 11k. I never leave a balance on my CC and have never had a late payment. Got my first credit card at 18 I think. Think i'm doing alright, considering i have a crappy income (made 30k last year) :p

Income doesn't impact credit score at all.

I know, but i'm pretty proud that my credit is good while paying my way through college and living in Santa Barbara on such low wages till I start making the big bucks.

That's great dude, keep it up. I'm just trying to dispel all the common misconceptions that come up regarding score. There's already been a post or two about income or debt to income - not relevant to credit score.
