What is a decent lower cost DVD-ROM drive to replace my CD drive with?

What is a decent lower cost DVD-ROM drive to replace my CD drive with? My CD drive is beginning to make funny noises and it was alway a noisy rattley drive anyway (Afreey 50X), so its comming time to replace... looking for an inexpensive DVD replacement drive which is reasonably quiet and performs well.

look for the Lite-On LTD-163. it's sold out in newegg but it's around 50 bucks. it's one of the fastest dvd drives and is the fastest drive in DAE speed besides the kenwood true 62x and 72x. go to www.cdspeed2000.com to check out what's a good dvd drive.

Hmmm.. already have a LiteOn CDRW drive... might be all LiteOn products soon...

I'd like to hear comments on noise if any one has one of these babies... don't want another jet engine!

What about the Pioneer 16X slot load at Newegg for $65 shipped?

I've heard lots of good things about that one on the forums.

I got an a-open from Newegg a couple of months ago, and am pleased with it. I havn't been happy with any cd rom since my beloved 8 speed died. All 4 of the drives since have been really loud, and didn't seem any faster than the 8X. The new dvd drive is quiet though, really a vast improvment.

Glad you mentioned that! I just got two of the Pioneer 106S (16X) slot drives from Newegg to replacxe to older Pioneer CD ROM slot drives.

Once you use a slot drive, you will be forever unhappy with those silly coffee cup holders!
