what temp would be considered "too hot" for a P4 3.2E ghz cpu? idle and load?

i have mine at 60C idle according to the Abit EQ program.

While your board is probably reading high, that would be quite a bit high. Are you sure your heatsink is seated properly, and did you use thermal paste?

Verify your temps with a thermal diode.

i'm pretty sure the heatsink is secure. i applied some generic thermal paste. i'm about to apply some Arctic Silver 3. how much would that drop my temp? also to remind you guys that it's a prescott, and i'm reading that prescotts get that hot?

Er, I'm retarded. I was reading it as 3.2EE. Go ahead and apply some AS and reseat the heatsink. As long as your PC is stable, you should be fine. You might need to disable thermal throttling and raise your automatic shutdown temps in the BIOS though, our Abit boards are finicky creatures. ;)
