Do people really burn DVDs while running AV scans and defragging their hard drive? When I game, I game. When I rip DVDs, I can still be on the internet or play music in the background. But I never rip DVDs AND game at the same time. I'd rather my computer be able to do one task absolutely stellar, then multiple CPU intensive tasks sorta mediocre.

Some people genuinely have a need for multi-tasking. The majority of people don't have a need for it, they just want to be able to.

Also, Athlon 64's can be better at multi-tasking with applications that don't fully load the CPU. For example, if I'm running WMP listening to MP3's, have Thunderbird open, have Firefox open with a few tabs, have MS Word open writing a document, and maybe have a download or two running in the background... the Athlon 64 system will likely run faster.
