what Intel chip is equal to the AMD 3500 and will it fit this (ECS P4M890T-M2 (V1.0B) Socket T (LGA 775) VIA P4M890 Micro ATX Intel Motherboard) ?



 
Equal to it in what way? What types of programs are you running? You would need a 3.4-3.6ghz in most cases, gaming wise, no P4 will match it. The board does support core 2 duo though, not sure if you need or want a dual core, but I would go with a core 2 duo over a P4 any day. I would go with a core 2 duo E6400 if it's in your price range.
 
i have in mind a 6300 but i want "cheaper" for now. and i was going to slowly build into a good 6300 system.

right now i just need basic net surfing capabilities. and that is even with dial up !

i'm just trying to piece together the cheapest system i can that will be good for about 18 months then i will be financially able to get a good system. who knows what will be "good"

 
For net surfing, you could just get a celeron and be good to go. It looks to support all LGA775 processors, including 65nm and core 2 duo. Just get something cheap, thats not too horribly slow, the 805 wouldn't be too bad in this case, but you could go cheaper, with a 2.8-3ghz P4.

can i go any "cheaper" and still have a decent system just for basic stable use ?
 
If you are gonna pay $89 for 3ghz prescott, you might as well get the pentium-d 805 dual core for $90. You could always go celeron to save another $20-30, but I'd stick with the 805 or 531.
 
this is why i am asking. i dont really know anything about Intel. AMD seems a lot simpler to me but i know, as of now, i want a Conroe compatible system for the future.

can you link me to the celeron that you speak of or should i not go lower than the 805 ?

 
you can't go lower than 805 for dual core, so that might be a worthwhile choice.
BTW, that MoBo will NOT run a conroe cpu. You need a 945p, 965p, 975x or specific nforce chipset.
All boards must specifically say "supports c2d"

The 3500+ will beat that by a slight margin, however the 3ghz model (p4 530) will come closer or best it.

And if you check the cpu support page for his motherboard..you will see that it DOES support c2d..
 
Yea, it'll be quite a bit slower in single-threaded apps though at stock, and I wouldnt bother overclocking it.
 
Yea you should notice quite a boost. Won't be as fast as a A64-3500 in single threaded apps, but if you multitask extensively, it should be on par if not better.

Out of curiousity, why?
If your timeframe for a good system is 18 months, then I can almost guarantee that you will be buying everything from scratch at that point...
1. AMD has a better than even chance of being faster then...but even if it isn't,
2. Intel will have a new socket and be pushing 45nm systems then, and
3. DDR3 will be starting as the new mainstream memory standard then...

Edit: BTW, AMD isn't a safe harbour for an 18 month window either...they too are expecting to be 45nm by then as well...

Edit2: Let me be a bit clearer... Planning for an upgrade on anything in 18 months won't work as neither AMD nor Intel will be making these chips at that time. For example, if you had bought a system 18 months ago for Intel you wouldn't be able to buy a modern CPU for it, and for AMD you'd only have another few months to do so (and not the high end at all).

I think that the best answer to the question requires more info...

1. What is your budget?
2. What do you do on a computer (and what do you want to do)?
3. Do you currently have existing components you want to incorporate into the system to cut costs?
