i already have a case and 420watt PSU

can i go any "cheaper" and still have a decent system just for basic stable use ?

You can get a Biostar Geforce6100 chipset socket AM2 board for $2 more than your VIA chipset ECS board. Then, you can get a socket AM2 Sempron 2800+ for a whopping $49 less than the Pentium 4. That will save you $47 over what you have spec'd here. The Biostar board will probably be overclock-capable and the Geforce6100 integrated video is near the top as far as integrated video goes. You just want it for net surfing with a modem? This will do the trick as well as the fastest Core 2 Duo. Future upgrades would be a second stick of RAM for dual channel operation, PCI-E video card if you get into games, and a faster and dual core CPU if you decide the $40 Sempron doesn't cut it anymore. Still, for web browsing... you're limited by your dial-up speed and no faster or more cores processor, or faster video, or more RAM will help.

A Prescott is like throwing away money in my opinion. Get at least a Pentium D if your going to go intel, but those arent worth it either, but they arent throwing away money.

STFU and get a Dell.

It will make things easier for everyone.

If not, then go read some articles on processors/mobos/memory/etc.

thanks ZAP, i think i will go with one with 6100 graphics for 53.99 and the Sempron 3000 for 50.99, that gets it under $300 before taxes and shipping.

the cheapest system you can build that would be upgradable would be a socket AM2 with a cheap Sempron. Then add an AMD quad core later.

This is definitely "Dude, you're getting a Dell" territory. Dell will be cheaper and/or better than whatever you price out on Newegg in this price range.

well i went to Dell and configured what i saw was the cheapest option and it comes to $369 so how is that better than the $299 i'm at now on Egg. including the case i have already bought for $50 its still cheaper to go the Egg route.

Do you need to factor in the cost of an Operating system? That is often overlooked and should be taken into consideration if you're not running Linux IMO. Probably included with the Dell in some form or another.

If you want to keep things cheap, why not get the 2800+ Sempron rather than the 3000+ - every $ counts!! :)

good one, i will probably go with the 2800 since i wont be able to see any difference with what i do.

its one of those cases where i try to rationalize "for only 10 more dollars i can get (whatever i'm considering) " but you are right that if its the "cheapest" i shouldnt even consider the 3000 i also just shaved $14.00 off by selecting a 80GB HD instead of the 160. i dont need that much anyway. i currently have 13GB and use very little of it.

that brings me to 275.96 before tax and shipping.
that is looking better

Thanks for the suggestions

$309 at Dell Small Business gets you a box with Sempron 3400+ w/512 RAM, 80GB hard disk w/MS Works & WinXP + 1 year warranty. You can probably improve that if you find some sort of coupons, and I don't think I've ever paid Dell a dime for shipping. A better deal than the Newegg build if you ask me, but it's up to you to do whatever you like.

Save another $85 or so by not buying Windows XP. Use Ubuntu or some other "easy" Linux. These days they install pretty smoothly and autodetect about as much hardware as Windows. OpenOffice is free and so is Firefox/Mozilla. You can probably find some LUG (Linux Users Group) near you if you need assistance. I know one guy who runs meetings for a Ubuntu specific group near Chicago. You can get a Ubuntu CD shipped to you for absolutely free.

I've been using Linux at the computer lab at school (Debian with Gnome) and it seriously doesn't feel much different from XP for most common tasks. Heck, I've had to use XP machines that looked/felt much more different than "normal" XP than the Linux GUI because people either fiddled with themes or had one of those programs that changed the look/feel (Windowblinds?). Talking with the guy that does the Ubuntu user group meetings, he even games using Linux, saying that many games which support OpenGL can be run on it, and he even plays WoW under Linux.

You may not even have to enter BIOS at all.

That board should be okay, but probably not a good overclocker <- probably not important to you though.

on my new PC now and just wanted to thank everyone who helped me. this thing is awesome compared to what i did have. the only thing that sucks is the dial-up part. oh and having to "buy" software to watch a DVD. that didnt make since to me that XP doesnt have that ability. oh well.

according to taskmanager the CPU plays a very small role in browsing the net. even downloading it is minimal and it only takes a few seconds to actually install the downloaded stuff do i really dont see a need in my case for anything faster.

again thanks for all the help.

Unless Microsoft has added support to WMP10 or something, the default one that installs with XP can act as a DVD player as long as some other software has already installed an MPEG2 codec.

There are free software available to play DVD movies. One (out of probably many) is Media Player Classic.

"it" told me i needed a DVD Code and recommended me sites to go to to get it. that is why i got it. the WMP is what wouldnt paly it. although i knew i should have asked here before shelling out 15 bucks for it. sorry about that. i had already bought Roxio burner but it didnt fix it when i installed it either. once i downloaded the code it all works fine now.

thanks
