What insect is this?

You don't actually have to read this, but it's an interesting story having to do with this very insect:
So my buddy catches this while we are camping. Holds on to it long enough to show off to everyone. When he finally releases it, the bug jumps onto another of my friends, and before he has time to react, practically bounces into the fire...and dies.
So I stroll over to take a look at its remains. As I am looking at its char-broiled body, another bug of the same type, without any provocation flies directly into the fire.
All I could think was WTF?!...BBQ🙂

Anyway, so i have no idea what insect this is.
BTW, this is in Southern Cal
 
A big, nasty, un-intelligent bug......He'd probably fit in well around ATOT 😉
 
Keep in mind that when they say the size they are measuring only the body and not the wings.
