What industry/products does the world rely upon the US for?

Lucky

Lifer
I was thinking of this because the the steel industry thread and how a few people said cheap labor internationally just overwhelms domestic production. Well, what industries does the US excel at, in spite of high wages relative to other countries?

I think only think of 2 off the top of my head?

defense/airplanes
software/IT (maybe?)

microsoft windows
cisco and juniper routers
and much other computer + networking equipment. we may not manufacture it all, but we do develop it and the companies are american companies.

The United States supplies much of the world's grain + beef. For the most part we take in raw materials and make more refined things out of them (processors, mobos, etc). The technology that is developed in the US also dissapates to the rest of the world.

Medical equipment
Heavy equipment - Caterpiller, John Deere comes to mind
Harley-Davidson Motorcycles - a couple of years ago, they had a 20% export quota

And - capital goods, automobiles, industrial supplies and raw materials, consumer goods, agricultural products.

Exports - partners: Canada 23%, Mexico 14%, Japan 8%, UK 5%, Germany 4%, France, Netherlands (2000) .
