what income do you need to consider buying a $600 video card?

The last expensive video card I bought was a Voodoo2! Not the question, but point is I was in high school at the time and had an SLI setup. Mom and dad's money was not involved.

I had one of those too, but I only paid something like $180 for the 8 MB version at the time. I'm not sure why people got the 12 MB version, since it seemed to perform the same in benchmarks.

Funny enough, I sold a Voodoo 3 PCI card that I had lying around about less than a year or 2 ago and surprisingly made around $50+ off of it.

Since 63% Of Americans Don't Have Enough Savings To Cover A $500 Emergency and the national average wage index for 2014 is 46,481.52 I would say you need to be making over $50K per year to afford a $600.- video card.

It wasn't until I started making significantly more than the national average that I decided a $400.- dollar card was able to be purchased. It's a want not a need.

I still have a 6870, but I'm going to get a GeForce 1060 when they are finally in stock.

The last video card I bought was a 4GB card for about $380 at Fry's. It's what I wanted (I did not need it) and my gaming experience on Battlefield 4 is much improved.

I could afford about $1k for a video card but why do that when what I did buy is just fine?

My advice: Figure out the specs and performance you need from a card and then buy the card that has those specs and performance and that fits your budget. Maybe go look on eBay or Craigslist for a slightly used one to save a couple bucks.

Even if you're the type of person to buy a $600 card yearly, that's still means saving less than a whopping $12 a week. For anyone who isn't literally living paycheck to paycheck, that shouldn't be difficult to do.

Never spent more than $300. I make plenty and realize it's a stupid investment for such little in return. I'd only purchase a $600 card if it helped me with my work.

I wanted a 480 not only out of preferring AMD but out of the hope of making my video card upgrades free with mining. I never found one in stock for a good price however and grudgingly had to settle for a 1060 that won't make anything.

The only way you can afford such a luxury is if you have investment income. Everyone knows videocards are a depreciating asset. Thats why warren buffet still uses a Voodoo 3dx to view his Bloomberg terminal every morning. You guys get your computer parts out of other people's trash like me right?

I'm not sure if this has been answered yet for the OP, but your income needs to probably be at least $600 a year to afford a $600 video card. I mean, if you're 12 years old, have a paper route and make $50 per month, and save all your money for a year, you can consider buying a $600 video card - and next month, consider buying a game to play.

If you aren't living with your parents and are independent, then you can consider buying a $600 video card as soon as your expendable savings amounts to $600. At that point, it's a matter of priorities.

Not sure why this is a difficult thing to figure out.

It's the only tier I purchase cards at, I just do it fairly infrequently. My last was a 980Ti. Before that it was a GTX 680. I usually buy when whatever game I'm playing at the time is annoyingly slow. I might buy early this round to get a DP 1.4 card so I can get a new monitor.
