They would prolly spit up on themselves....

Seriously tough, they probably would not understand.

They would perhaps realize their ineptitude at rudimentry tasks or general lathargic nature, but the differentiation capabilities and the necessary analysis would not be there...

Unless we are talking about the "idiot from shine..."

And you would know this how?

You have a couple of really nice big words there, so I am assuming that you have extensive experience dealing with the mentally challenged. Would you care to share your knowledge with us?

You need to think about things that might actually matter and affect your own life...

Interesting question. I'd answer it by pointing out that "mentally challenged" defines a spectrum of people with a fairly wide range of abilities ranging from not or barely functioning at all on up to almost normal. You have to look at each person as a separate case (and, incidentally, as a person) rather than pigeonholing them into a category and generalizing about the entire group.

I'm self-aware enough to understand that there are people out there both smarter and not as smart as I am. Someone who is "mentally challenged", yet functioning in society, will be able to see and interact with other people who are understanding things that they themselves fail to grasp. I would imagine that they would either live a frustrating life, or come to some kind of understanding with their own limitations in that regard. On the other hand, for someone who is so far down the scale that he or she is barely able to form abstract thoughts, I would imagine that people like this would have no idea.

yes, actually they do understand. my aunt is mentally challenged and once i heard her go "i dont like being different. i wish i was like everyone else."

if you dont feel your heart drop when you read that, you are a sick bastard. my aunt is so nice and people who are mentally challenged are usually the nicest people you will ever meet.

I'd venture to say that most, if not all, are able to notice that they are different from the majority of people around them. They may not fully understand the complexities of the difference, but they could probably tell you generally what the discrepencies are.

Perhaps you could begin with . . .

They would prolly spit up on themselves....

and then move right along to . . .

Seriously tough, they probably would not understand.

That would be a good start.

Yes there is a spectrum of people fitting in different places. One of the things that I think about is someone with autism and who is a genius in a very narrow area. Just because someone is mentally challenged doesn't mean their life is worthless or neccissarily worth less than anyone elses.

Damn right.

what I meant in my post is that many retarded indivuduals do have the ability to understand and diagnose their condition, at least in terms of the symptoms(lathargy, forgetfullness, temper tanrums, etc). The problem is that there is a lot of "everyday" psychology that people feel the mentally retarded don't need to know, and do not bother teaching them.

For example, your aunt, depending WHOLEY on her level of handicap, might induce within herself emotions of pity or sadness due to the restraints she must indure, such as a child would. In other words, many times the realization remains quite emotional. However, if that person were to be taught skills that many of us take for granted, such as self-confidence, and the ability to defend that confidence, their social capacities and understandings would be quite different.

From my experience, most people do not have the patience to teach psych to the mentally retarded. Over the years, I have participated in assisting in the care of two retarded individuals/friends for a number of years each.

My last experince, which is currently ongoing, is with my grandmother. Is is slowly withering away(in the ICU in Montreal as I write) and I can't help but comapre the responses I get when I speak to ehr differently. If I truely make a grandious to treat her like an equal person, in that I totally disregard her handicap in communication, and inturn focus on normal social conversation(how was your day.....di you read balh..etc) I get a very unique, personalized, and thoughout response. If I belittle the conversation, by appealing to her rudimentary emotions, I get dribble.

I meant to insult no one. I honestly do not know whether or not what I am writing or medically correct, but I have seen it actuallized through personal experience.

THe mentally challenged may have hte capacity, but if they do not have the knowledge necessary to develop differentiation and self-analysis, their handicap is not what is holding heir minds back:)

I spent 8 long years as an instructor for mentally retarded adults... They know. One of the people I worked with did something really really stupid and I said "what are you, retarded or something?" without thinking... He responded "uhhhhh, yeah, yeah." One of the many amusing moments during those 8 years. Other moments were amusing for me, but not for the general public -- imagine a 50 year old man, the size of a pro wrestler (lived on a farm and did a lot of farm chores) lying on the floor in the center of a mall crying and having a tantrum because he wanted to see Santa Claus.
