It took them years and several false allegations before the guy who sent out the anthrax mailings was investigated. He eventually killed himself so even today they aren't 100% certain he did it. This boston bomber could certainly just disappear, but likely he will be emboldened by the crime and send out a manifesto or try again and be caught.
