What if we had less (or more) than 10 fingers?

(Inspired by the other thread on a similar topic)

What if we evolved (or were created by god) to have only 4 fingers on each hand? Would our number system be based on octal (0-7 for each digit only)? What if we were given 16 total, would we as a society have developed a hexidecimal system instead of a decimal one, and more importantly, how would you decide which one to put a ring on? And would you randomly choose one of your middle fingers to raise, or would you raise both of your middle fingers?

Would nose picking be acceptable, because your chances are now less (.125 instead of .20) of coming in contact with that finger in hand-to-hand contact?

And speaking of handshakes....imagine having 8 fingers. Enough said.

One last note....where the hell would you fit 16 keys on a keyboard?
