What if the world no longer needed Middle East oil?

lets say 10yrs from now advances in Solar Power arrays and hybrid cars reduced our need for oil so much so that we no longer need oil from the Middle East.

We are self sufficient from home production (ie: Alaska/Texas/Gulf coast) and Europe can import from Russia.

Eliminate OPEC from the equation.

How would the middle east change?

I dont think a broke middle east will change much from today. Right now most of the $$$ is in the hands of Kings and Princes.
The general public is poor. Those poor are the ones joining Al-Qaeda.

Unfortunately fuel isn't the only thing we need oil for.

Not going to happen.

As long as the "progressive" opposes the development of natural resources within the United States and as long as the "progressive" opposes the construction of nuclear power and all of its supporting entities (see Yucca Mountain) middle east oil is here to stay.

Now, if it did happen, terrorism would rise exponentially. The people of those countries are already poor a fuck (like most of the world) and cutting off their only source of revenue would push many more over the edge.

The section of the world literally has NOTHING to offer the world outside of oil.

But we don't need ME oil for those purposes. If we didn't have to burn it we'd already have enough domestically.

The US could currently rid ourselves of the need to import oil from the ME along with the associated costs (wars, .mil so wars don't happen, etc.) and risks (economic ruin if we get cut off from SA oil) with domestic production if we really wanted to.

We don't want to though. As far as the rest of the world, I don't really care that much.

Lots of European countries have vassal states in the Middle East, and they would rather keep those ties than become dependent upon Russia. They are already scared of their energy security and dominance of Russia in the area.

The US will alway be affect by OPEC, because oil price is base on the international open market therefore will drive oil price in the US up or down regardless of how minute the oil consumption be.

Unless US somehow become 100% self sufficient and American government ban oil export.

The quote from Syriana applies here.

"Twenty years ago you had the highest Gross National Product in the world, now you're tied with Albania. Your second largest export is secondhand goods, closely followed by dates which you're losing five cents a pound on... You know what the business community thinks of you? They think that a hundred years ago you were living in tents out here in the desert chopping each other's heads off and that's where you'll be in another hundred years, so on behalf of my firm I accept your offer."

Without oil money the middle east would end up looking like Africa with lots of warfare among themselves and lots of people dying, but the rest of the world wouldn't even care anymore.

Well oil money fuels corruption and corporate profiteering so In some ways the middle east would progress faster since the heads of state would lose funding for their control mechanisms. Look at Africa, the most successful countries do better without oil revenue....

Oil money is blood money....

its not going to happen, but hypothetically:

All the extreme riches in places like Dubai, Saudi Arabia, UAE, and Kuwait will evaporate. Their leaders have been so wasteful with their money, instead of investing it for the future, they just blow it all. Which is fine for them, but their people will suffer.

Over time populations will move away from the middle east, it will go back to like it was in the first half of the 20th century before the oil boom.

I really have no idea, just speculating.

Cool...so where is all this domestic oil, so we can get drilling, baby?

Is this a joke question? Somewhere around 10% of our imports come from the ME, the majority being SA. We could completely cut out the ME as Canada and Mexico are our largest importers and we have huge supplies of untapped oil that could easily make up for the 10% we'd lose purchasing from the ME. Hell why does oil need to be the only thing to replace? If we could build up some nuke plants instead of idiots and hippies blocking it at every turn we might actually see EVs take off. Or if we could build a solar farm without animal activists crying that a couple goats might die that could power most of California during the day. There's a lot more to the "get off ME/foreign oil" crap than drilling here, just no one wants to do anything about it or people cry to much over stupid shit instead of looking towards the FUTURE.

The only way we're going to power new technologies is to power all the crap we have now. You want innovations in nuclear technology here in the states? Start building more plants. The longer we take to start using "cheap" "renewable" energy the longer it's going to take us to figure out the next step beyond it.

As a group they would still be one of our biggest trade partners. They would turn their sands into beaded glass and American consumerism would take over. We would import necklaces by the trillions, they would turn into the next "must have" item...

Hopefully Iran doesn't turn their sands into beaded glass first.

You said
"the whole "get off of foreign oil" is just a scam lol."

How are Canada and Mexico not foreign countries?

Did you mean to say "Middle East oil" instead of "foreign"?

That's better.

Now we've moved up to rock-solid conspiracy theories.
