What if the election is a tie?

I heard you have to get a certain amount of electorial college points to, otherwise the congress gets to vote for the candidate.
There was one year where this ALMOST happened. This was before the civil war, and if that happened, this extreme right winged dictator would have been elected into office by the southern states.

Kerry won't win WV or Iowa. Jeb is about to deliver Florida for GW depending on how he responds to these hurricanes. BTW, this is supposed to be in P&N so all the trolls there can jack-off about it.

Watch it Mill, you are crossing the line to many times today.

It won't be a tie. Bush will win, even if Kerry gets more votes. Just like Bush won in 2000 even though Gore had more votes.

Just the way it should be.

I don't think so. If we're rational about how we discuss this (which may even turn into a flamewar) the OT croud can see it as an intersting application of a law from before there were even 50 states. Its a good read, no matter what the outcome is. Like the article actually says:

A commenter points out that I forgot 3 USC 15, which dictates that the Electoral College vote must be certified on January 6, after the newly elected Congress is sworn in. Which means the party-line breakdown I described here is of conversational interest only.

Pretty neat to see how this situation would be handled, since politics are so partisan these days.

If there's a tie, the Constitution says that the tie would be broken by a poll of the House of Representatives. I think a better idea would be to put them on special edtion of Jeopardy. At least there would be a chance that intellect would prevail... for a change. 😛

Florida is no lock Bush even though he seems to be up in polls in that state, and most states throughout America. But things can change.

I still think Bush will win in the end.

If no majority of the EC is obtained, the vote goes to the House.

It can happend when either there is a tie (equal number of votes) or Multi candidate race exists and EC votes are such that no one get the required 50% majority.

If it's a tie then it's the Dem's turn to steal it. 😀

Actually, the Wall Street Journal has raised this possibility on numerous occassions, and suggested the addition of one U.S. Representative to the House to make the total number of electoral college votes an odd number. Wouldn't necessarily prevent a tie, but goes a long way towards it. IIRC, the extra House seat would go to Utah for now, then be up for grabs after the next census.

It cannot be a tie. Bush still has the 5-4 majority in the Supreme Court that empowered him the last time. What's worse than "what if it's a tie" is the probability that anything close will certainly become a Bush victory.

If there is a tie, we shall chop both canidates in half and put them in the oval office. that way we have a true democracy and a do nothing government.

according to the latest polls, bush is a weak WV and kerry is a weak Iowa. they seem pretty much like they could go either way right now.

also: not to...you know...ummm...well...not that im trying to correct you, or anything...but i the "to" should be "too."
