Proclaiming his innocence, convicted Republican Sen. Ted Stevens asked Alaskans to "stand with me" as he pledged to defend the Senate seat he has held since 1968.

"I ask that Alaskans and my Senate colleagues stand with me as I pursue my rights," Stevens, the longest serving Republican in the Senate, said in a statement Monday. " I remain a candidate for the United States Senate."

OK, if he does win can the Senate refuse to seat him? If his appeal is accepted would the Senate then seat him?
Will Bush pardon him, and if Bush does pardon him can or will the Senate refuse to seat him?
Darn, anyone know the specifics of what happens when a Senator is convicted?

Stevens will be choked out MMA style by his Hulk tie.

You heard it here first.

Edit - Of course Bush will pardon him. Libby, Ambramoff, Cunningham, they're getting a get out of jail free card from W.

I wouldn't worry about it too much, he won't win.

From fivethirtyeight:

The closest recent parallel I can find to the Ted Stevens situation is that of former Ohio governor Bob Taft, who in August, 2005 was convicted on misdemeanor charges of failing to disclose gifts and golf trips paid for by lobbyists. Taft plead no contest and remained in office, but this didn't have a favorable effect on his approval ratings. He went from a 34-55 (-21) in a University of Cincinnati poll taken in April 2005 to a 26-65 (-39) in the same poll in August 2006, a net decline of 18 points.

Let's assume that Stevens will also suffer a decline in his net approval score of 18 points. Since he's at roughly 50/50 now, that would put him in the range of 40 percent approve, 60 percent disapprove. Our regression model uses approval ratings for incumbent senators as one of its inputs, and thinks a decline of this magnitude would cost a senator about 6 points in the polls ... actually, 5.8 points. So what we're going to do is apply a 5.8 point penalty to Stevens' numbers in Alaska. Since the race was a toss-up before, this puts him about 6 points behind overall, making Mark Begich an 87 percent favorite to take his seat. That seems conservative to me, frankly, given that even the guys at RedState are abandoning Stevens, but it's what we'll run with until there's some polling out.

Cliffs: He won't win.

Then he and Democrat Congressman Jefferson here in New Orleans (who is currently under indictment) that had the national guard take him to his house the day after Katrina so he could take 100,000 grand out of his freezer and snatch his laptops before the FBI could get down there can high 5 each other in the capital.

Jefferson is in the run off and its going to be close.......

Can't possibly be worse than Bill Jefferson trying to maintain his seat for Louisiana.

Dude, seriously, if he wins it, I'm moving to Baton Rouge. I can't believe Nagin has endorsed him.

If this conviction had happened 2 months ago, Stevens might have been able to come back. Getting convicted a week and a half before the election? He's screwed.

There is a difference between being under indictment and conviction. (Although in Jefferson's case I really can't see how he's not guilty.) I think in the public's mind there has been enough time since the indictment that people are glossing over it some. It really does show you the power of incumbency though.

i just heard that no matter what happens, Ted Stevens will be making $122k per year in pension and that amount will rise over time as the cost of living rises. absolutely disgusting.

Well, he is running for reelection, and now we can only wait for the voters of Alaska to decide. While I hope he loses his reelection bid, I am not allowed to vote in Alaska, so I can only watch and wait.

My main fear is that Steven's might win reelection, early in 2009 be forced to resign his seat, and then Palin gets to pick his replacement.

I'm not entirely convinced that Palin will be allowed to serve out her full term.

IIRC, I don't think that the Alaska governor has the ability to appoint a replacement senator anymore as they instead have a special election to fill the vacancy.

If a Don can run the Mafia from inside prison, why shouldn't a Senator be allowed to?

I read that conviction does not invalidate him from candidacy, though if elected, the senate can indeed vote to have him removed.

At this late date can the Republicans still get someone on the ballot instead of Stevens?

Palin should nominate her son, Trackball.
