What if I let my car get stolen....

I was thinking, I'm really ready to sell my Firebird and get an LS1.

but I don't know if I could sell it for as much as I could get insurnace on it..

my friends dad suggested I drive it to a bad part of town and leave it with the door unlocked and the keys in it. :Q

I laughed it off, then actually thought about it... 😱

that would be interesting, I pay off my loan with the insurance many and have enough left plus what I have in the bank to put a 50% down payment on an LS1 and save money for mods..

hrm..

I would probably think about it, but I doubt I would ever go through with it... I would probably have a funny feeling in my stomach for a long time afterwards...

isn't that considered insurance fraud???

I wouldn't do it man. You have to face the crappy depreciation value that the car gets.

Or just drive your car until you've gotten as much use out of it.

but its not as bad a scam as taking a sledge to the car or setting it afire and claiming someone else did it -

I mean, really all I'm doing it parking it... someone ELSE is stealing it, I'm the unsuspecting victim.

I've got a better idea. You leave it parked, unlocked, and with the keys in it somewhere that I can find it. I pick it up, wait a few days until you get your new car, then I drive your "stolen" car over to your house and ram it into your new car. Now, doesn't that sound like a good idea?

Then you could tell "Bubba" the whole story in your cell after getting busted for insurance fraud... 😉

hehe....definitely insurance fraud. Not that all of us with beaters (not that your car is a beater 😛) haven't thought of that before. 😀

okay, well then how about this..

it would be better off for me if someone stole and totaled the car, than if I tried to sell it.

so if someone stole it, I wouldn't be too upset.

how is this illegal? is there a law that says you have to be pissed if someone steals your car? 😕

I'm not paying anyone to steal the car.. I was just careless and someone happened to steal it.

insurance fraud would be if I payed or told someone to steal it for me, of if I drove it off a cliff, or wrecked or set it on fire on purpose and said it was accidental or vandalism

wasn't this a simpson's episode? take note. it didn't work out for Moe it probably won't work out for you 🙂

1. They might steal it and abandon it. You'll get it back.
2. Your deductible.
3. It files against your comp policy, which will result in higher insurance rates.
4. Your ins company will probably pay your "wholesale" trade in value if its totally lost. It would be less than what you can sell the car for locally.

Not sure, but if your insurance company finds out that it was left unsecured and with the keys in the ignition, they may not pay your claim at all. Some policies are written to protect the company against just that sort of fraud.

Check your policy carefully, but my advice would be not to try.

My .02....,

Let's be clear - that's insurance fraud. Your friend's dad thought that was a good idea? He's probably going to call the insurance company after your car gets stolen and turn you in for a cut of the claim money, and you'll never know.

okay, lets change the scenario around, and you tell me how its insurance fraud.

My car gets stolen from me (I don't pay anyone or tell anyone to steal it, I just park it to go in to work and it gets stolen).

okay, I decide I'm not mad because I get insurance money for it and I couldn't have sold it for that amount.

how is that fruad? I'm not totalling the car on purpose, I'm not paying anyone to do anything to it.. I am minding my own business and someone steals my damn car, it happens every day..

I've read of people who have done it, but beware of your insurance people. The more they press, the harder it would be to prove that you didn't let your car get stolen. But what if the cops do find your car with dings, dents and the stereo missing, but it runs?

Now you're out plenty of cash to get it fixed just so you can sell it.

I wouldn't do it. It's insurance fraud, no doubt, and I think it's very hard to get away with it.
How would you feel when you see on the news that some teenagers took your car for a joy ride and killed a family on the way to the movies? It's not worth it.

Hey, if you think that's perfectly innocent thing to do, knock yourself out. If it's OK with you, though, I'll continue to not be happy about my insurance going up to cover what "happens every day". Now I know why, at least.
