What if China Invades Taiwan?

My curiosity has been peaked with Taiwan's latest military exercises and the fact that China "demanded" that Taiwan be called "Chinese Taipei" in the Olympics. Why they caved, I do not know.

So what if China invaded Taiwan? Would you support the US defending Taiwan? What should the world do? The UN?

No flaming, please. Just post your point of view and see what others say their point of view is.

Ummm, tensions between the two have been VERY high. China has been making some very real threats.

Perhaps they're counting on the same thing deterring us from defending Taiwan. If it's an unprovoked attack, I imagine the UN would have to defend Taiwan... and as a member of the UN, the US ought to follow their lead.

After weighing the consequences I'd think the right conclusion would be that it wouldn't be worth intervening militarily.

Do you have any idea what an invasion of Taiwan would do to the world economy?

Yeah it would cause a lot of problems but no where near the problems an all out war between us and China would cause!

I'm sure the Japanese Shibuya girls would fight off the Chinese with their lipsticks and eyeliner pencils. Taiwan would be A-OK.

If China decided to use force to retake Taiwan there is little doubt that they could do it. If the US stepped in to defend it I believe it would exculate and I don't believe that China is willing to take the chance that the US won't intervene.

If Taiwan was attacked, national security interests would probably necessitate an American response. Half the world's freakin' semiconductor manufacturing capability in on that island, and that includes that for a bunch of 'sensitive' equipment in the US.

If we do and China doesn't back down we would have to reinstitue the Draft to be able to have enough able bodied men and women to fight that war. That would go over like a Led Balloon with Americans, especially those who would be subject to conscription!

and what the hell you mean with chinese help taiwan's economy will boom if china takes them back? They doing fine by themselves..to say that is stupid and it doesnt help, if anything it makes it worse since China is a communist country...

taiwan can fight back tho. Not as rich as the japs but i saw their special forces and even normal military paratroopers. Believe it or not, my friend met at Taiwan paratrooper here in Dallas, Texas. Basicaly they give you hella lot of money to go to college. Small but strong country. China is big but their average income is much lower too.

You forget one thing: Taiwan is an island. China's navy sucks. All the US has to do is even get a hint that China is going to invade, and place a fleet (there's always one close by) in between and China's invasion is DOA.
Now if China decides to nuke Taiwan, that's a different story. But the only way they can invade is if they absolutely surprise the whole region by somehow moving enough troops and equipment to their coast, moving enough ships to carry these troops and equipment to the same place, loading them all, then making the trip to Taiwan undetected.
Nearly impossible.

Riiiight. I guess along those lines, if England wanted to invade the United States, they'd just "be taking back their own land"? I guess we're all English then, and not American.
Taiwan's economy is much better than China's.

Heh, the US wouldn't do a thing.

Walmart would never give the ok.

China is at least as safe as Saudi Arabia from any serious US action.....especially with this administration.

The current US administration would claim no WMD were found and thus there would be no need for invasion.

Jesus. Want me to paint you a picture? I made a jab at the Bush administration with a joke that really made little sense. Your joke was equally limp.

Still need help?

If China invaded Taiwan, and no one helped Taiwan, it'd be over for Taiwan. We'd only be able to defend ourselves for a few days, according to the latest news about the military simulations.

China would not nuke Taiwan - that isn't their point. They don't want to destroy it - they just want the Taiwanese people to admit that they've always been a part of China, and killing them all isn't gonna accomplish anything for them. They'd be reprimanded throughout the world and would also lose the economic value Taiwan has.

I most definitely support the US defending Taiwan.... hell I'd even join the military if it meant that I could help Taiwan.

Taiwan doesn't have many allies in the world, so pretty much the US is its only hope...
