If China invaded Taiwan, and no one helped Taiwan, it'd be over for Taiwan. We'd only be able to defend ourselves for a few days, according to the latest news about the military simulations.

China would not nuke Taiwan - that isn't their point. They don't want to destroy it - they just want the Taiwanese people to admit that they've always been a part of China, and killing them all isn't gonna accomplish anything for them. They'd be reprimanded throughout the world and would also lose the economic value Taiwan has.

I most definitely support the US defending Taiwan.... hell I'd even join the military if it meant that I could help Taiwan.

Taiwan doesn't have many allies in the world, so pretty much the US is its only hope...
Then they are Doomed, Doomed I tell you!

Anyone else think China is going to be a major problem in the future? They are way over populated and won't they eventually have to start looking at some new land for themselves?

Do you have any idea what an invasion of Taiwan would do to the world economy?

yeah, most of the mobo are from Taiwan. hehehe

and optical media storage just to name a few.

The US will probably let China take Taiwan over. It's not worth getting into a fight with China to protect Taiwan, IMO.

The rest of the world also needs to step up, but they're not going to do anything for the same reason.

Give it 10-15 years when they start making enough money to invest into their navy then you'll see a strong Chinese naval fleet.

with 60 billions trading with US, china won't do that.

Perhaps they're counting on the same thing deterring us from defending Taiwan. If it's an unprovoked attack, I imagine the UN would have to defend Taiwan... and as a member of the UN, the US ought to follow their lead.

Uh China is a permanent member of the UN Security Council. They have a veto.

And the US will always be one step ahead. Do you think the US is sitting still? No, we have several different types of ships in development, that will be deployed in the next 15 years. And no Im not talking about the new type of carriers.

Defending Taiwan wouldn't be beneficial for the US.

I question if even Taiwanese soldiers would even bother fighting. It would be futile.

Dude, please, take a look at the damn map. Most of China is still rural. They've got plenty of land to fit all their people and if i remember correctly, they are trying to slow down population growth.

Sure the U.S will have the top of the line ships and China can build their ships to go against ours causing damage. It's not like they won't be able to hit us in the water. China is growing fast and they will have the means in 10-15 maybe 20 years to build some very capable ships if they invest the money into the technology for it. They won't be like the ships of the U.S, but if they build a large fleet then there is going to be a problem.

Its a lot more complicated. Tawain(Formosa) was settled in the late 1500s by Spain. Dutch kicked them out in the early 1600s. A general from the Ming Dynasty decided he wanted to own Formosa so he too his 25,000 troops and took it over, declaring him King of Taywan. He died four months later.

The Ching Dynasty later conquered Taywan. In 1895 Taiwan declared its self a republic to try and ward off the japanese.

Later on in 1895 the Japanese took over Taiwan. After WW II the Republic of China sent troops to expel the Japanese. They decided, hey we like Taiwan, we will now rule Taiwan. The chinese massacred thousands of taiwanese.

Uh oh here comes 1949 and the communist take over of China. The former govt of the Republic of China and over 1 million people fled to Taiwan.

Bottom line is. China past or present has never done anything for Taiwan, either defense wise or economics wise. Taiwan has been its own country in the past. IMHO Taiwan is CERTAINLY NOT part of China.

Also IMHO it was extremely foolish for the US to use Taiwan as a political bargining chip with China during the Vietnam war.

They don't need more room, and they won't need more room for humans for a long time. What they need is good farmland to feed their people, and more importantly ENERGY! As China becomes more developed, their hunger for energy and petroleum will also grow. That is what we should be worried about.

China and the US will never come to blows. The most likely situation would be a war between two other nations in which the US backs one and China backs the other, like the Korean War.

An actual war between the US and China would be catastrophic.

I doubt it.... Bush has publicly stated that the US will do whatever it takes to protect Taiwan. Of course his words alone don't mean anything, but at least he is aware of the situation.

BTW, I doubt the US would let China take Taiwan. Taiwan is a growing democracy, and letting a communist country take it over doesn't seem to fit with the ideals of American democracy...

The US should defend Taiwan for several reasons, one of which is that an oppressive communist regime should never be allowed to take over a democratic nation. As Pacfanweb said, China may have a huge army, but their ability to project power is extremely limited. 2 or 3 US carrier battle groups could probably stop any invasion attempt cold.

You're much too idealistic, IMO. I'd think that possible disruption of any trade with China would prevent the US from directly intervening.

I'd be happy if the US actually stepped in, but I doubt it would. Taiwan should also try to enlist the help of other countries in the world.

have to agree on that point, the US would not just stand aside and let China take over Taiwan
1. Taiwan is deomcratic and China is communist. it would be like us letting the terroists win. (even though i dont support the war)
2. Taiwan holds a lot of technology, for the people that like asus, gigabye, msi, yes those are made in Taiwan.
3. China has a lot of people in its army but how are they ever going to get it onto mainland Taiwan?
4. If China uses nukes then it would virtually be WW3, the entire UN and US would be against China. just imagine nukes comming in from every angle at China. j/k.
5. Im Taiwanese and that fcking idiot up there talking about Taiwans economy improving if China takes over. pfft China dosent have a economy! wonder why they want Taiwan......*hint hint, Taiwans tech/economy*
