There is VERY little information on the net, Asus showed a 23.6" LCD on on computex which can do true 120hz and is 16:9, 2ms gray <--> gray, 1080p full HD 1920x1080

The model nr is VG242H

Other rumors about LG coming out with a 23.6" 120hz monitor soon also.

Otherwise there is as good as no information, the asus part MIGHT be coming out end of this year.

I want it since it might be just the right size, 22" 120hz didn't tempt me that much since i already have a 22" and i was waiting for a 24" to make the switch to 120hz LCD.

Major panel makers "just" started producing 23.6" 120hz panels, so we can expect a whole bunch "soon".

You lost me at 1920x1080. Where the heck is 1920x1200?

Seriously, I'm hating this 16x9 aspect ratio. Let's keep the 16x10 aspect ratio which I felt was a good compromise between height and width.

If only there was a time frame on when we're supposed to see these. I'm excited for this not because its a larger monitor, but because we need more options on the market to drive prices down, and ASUS seems to have a good rep for decent quality LCDs at low prices...

I'm happy with my humble 60Hz Asus VW246H (TN panel) for gaming, however I would rather have the new NEC IPS 16:9 panel coming out if I was spending more money over the TN 120Hz LCD ,link. .

I have actually got use to 16:9 over 16:10 WS,so 16:9 now seems natural to me :).

Are these monitors w/ refresh rates absolutely necessary?

Unless you play a twitch shooter game like CS:S its going to be really hard to spot the difference.

Not at all. Just today I hooked up my old CRT just for kicks, and despite it being a piece of shit and can 'only' give me 100Hz @ 1024x768...even that is soooo much silkier smooth than my 60Hz LCD I can't believe I forgot how much better it was in this respect...OLED really can't come soon enough.

Of course it's a TN.

No one wants good panels; bring on more shitty TNs.

not that we'd really want any other panel type if our priority concern was responsive performance while gaming...hell, casual and slower paced gaming where we'd want to spoil ourselves with high resolution and eye candy doesn't even require the 120Hz that is the whole point of this monitor

granted, if using the monitor for its actual marketed use (ie 3D), I'd suppose having better viewing angles and overall image quality would be what you'd actually want, although I also wouldn't be surprised if the 3D effect could also hinder that additional image quality in its disruptively distortive sort of way

either way, we're not going to get a 'perfect' monitor until OLED

I don't know a single person who can see any kind of ghosting or input lag on any less than ancient *-IPS.

I imagine someone on some forum has seen it, but in general, *-IPS is not only dramatically superior to TN in every aspect of quality, you do not have response time issues.

I bought about 5 different TN panels for my gaming rig last year and all went back after coming off 21" IPS panel...(lesson learned)

Is it true 120Hz or is it 120Hz through interpolation, like the other "120Hz" or "240Hz" LCD TVs out there? Interpolation by its very nature adds input lag, which would be a dealbreaker.

Oh yeah, I'm also hating the 16:9 aspect ratio. Let's do it properly, LCD manufacturers. Just admit you're going with 16:9 because it's a cost-cutting measure.

its not just ghosting, its also input lag, and honestly TN isn't that bad for gaming when considering image quality, if it means lower costs so be it, current 120Hz panels aren't cheap, IPS ones already demand a price premium, throwing 120Hz on top of it would only drive that up.

Like I said, we won't get a perfect panel until OLED. Bitching about a perfect LCD won't get you anywhere because the technology had too many setbacks to overcome from the very start.

In fact, if it wasn't for nVidia's gimmicky 3D foray, we wouldn't even have 120Hz as a option...

Yes, by the very nature of the 3D feature they're built to support these 120Hz monitors have to be able to accept an input of 120Hz. Choosing not to use the 3D feature and strictly going for a 120Hz refresh rate is up to you.

then you must hate 16:10 as well, as the formats are not too dissimilar, and the only significant reason we ever had two different formats was to keep TVs and monitors separate specifically to sell more units...

I dislike the loss of vertical resolution over 16:10, simple as that. To cut the monitor's vertical resolution to market it as "1080p" is purely an economic decision in the part of LCD manufacturers to cut costs. I suppose the lack of letterboxing in media viewing isn't a bad feature, but to say that one would be willing to lose vertical resolution because "that's what games are meant to be played at" is a foolish notion.

I use my LCD for other things other than media viewing or gaming, I very much like 16:10 monitors and am saddened by the recent invasion of 16:9 monitors, even into the premium IPS/VA line of monitors as well. I don't think I'm alone in saying 16:9 for monitors is a cheap copout and should be relegated to budget panels only.
