What Headunit to get?

I got a 99 Grand AM, with a double DIN opening, I want a HU that plays mp3's, and shows the song names. I plan on getting 1 or 2 amps and subs so i would also need preamp outs, i kinda like the pioneer DEH-P8500MP, anyone here familiar with it? I would like to spend under 350$.

Only one some models. They have 1 model thgat doesnt require the Commander unit, but I cant remember the model number right off. Its one of the entry level CD HU's, I do know that.

http://www.pioneerelectronics.com/pe/product/detail/0,,2076_4041_35390,00.html Get the premiere version. It has a sturdier design and usu. has the higher volt preouts. http://www.thezeb.com/caraudio/pioneer_stereo_receivers.html Thezeb is a reliable place. You can get fit info and any harnesses/tools from crutchfield for fairly cheap... and they give detailed instructions.

I'm very happy with my 740MP, 12 disc changer (1270 model), and US Acoustics USX-2050 USX-2150 amps being run on the preouts.

I have a 7500MP, been good so far, I didn't get the 8500 because I figured that dumb 2 piece faceplate was one more thing to break.

i just ordered my 3500 the other day, excellent from first hand experiences with friends with the same HU. pioneer just kicks ass, and so does their speakers.

I started a thread about the 8500 vs the 9815 over at soundillusions. The general opinion was that for the best SQ, go with Alpine units. People who owned both posted, and although the 8500 is a little more snazy looking, the Alpine wins in SQ. One downside a lot of people had is that the 8500 is slow in reading MP3 cds. After reading replies, and doing a search(as the topic had been discussed many times before)I went with the Alpine 9815.

I havn't yet installed it(hopefully tomorrow or wed)So i can't write a personal opinion yet. They both retail for around $500, though if you expect to spend under $350 and had the 8500 in mind, can I assume you are getting these without the retail markup?

since i dont have that much money to replace all my speakers yet, i was thinking of getting a sub and amp and keeping my other stock speakers, how would this setup work with the bass being taken from the stock speakers? or are they to weak to keep up with the subs? the fronts are 4" and the rears are 6x9 Delco stuff.

Depends what sub and how hard you drive it. I got lucky, my tweets and *almost* keep up with my sub. Its very close, but they do start to cackle. My midbass? Sheesh. Aint even CLOSE to keepin up.
I desperately need midbass drivers!

what kind of subs?

how many watts?

kenwood, alpine, and panasonic are all good

alpine = SQ

kenwood = NICE headunit, and FAST read times

pioneer = decent SQ and NICE fancy dancy displays

for like 200$ you can have an AWESOME component set, or go over to www.thezeb.com and buy the VERY nice cdt-61a's for 150$ and then buy the usx2080 which is like 80$ i believe. and you should be able to keep up with any sub generally speaking.

need recommendations on subs???

http://www.edesignaudio.com has NICE high quality inexspensive subs, and amps

there are others around. resonant engineering (re) JL (but their 10w6's cost a shlt load)

i dont need anything that powerful 200-300 watts, im thinkin maybe 2 10 inchers, is there anythin i can buy in a prebuilt inclosure, so i dont have to measure and calculate all the stuff it takes me make boxers?

well i love my edesign sub, and they have EVERY measurement and cut on their site.

if you only get a 12.14k and 400.2 then you will be fine. put it in a sealed box and it will sound very very nice (mine was ported)

or you could get the 12.14k and some other amp that is less powerful.

also if you went with a component set of speakers, and amp, then you could get the alpine ampless hu (forget the model number) but it doesnt have an internal amp, and has amazing SQ i have heard.
