I am getting a Dell Axim and, among other things, will be using it to play MP3's. I want to get a decent pair of headphones that are small and portable. Any suggestions?

note - ear buds are out as they don't stay in my ears well...

Koss KSC50

There /will/ be some noise polution around you if you listen to it at a medium-loud volume. (You'll get that with any non-circumaural/non-bud headphones.. the price you pay.)

Light, comfortable, sound great.

I've got Senn 280P's on my head right now. They're massive. A friend has Senn 570(?) Much lighter, but BIG. From what I've read and researched, good Senns are not light and portable.

thanks - good link.

My friend mentioned the PortaPros.

Anyone know a link to a picture of them in their case?

Mwilding, check out http://www.fixup.net/tips/audio.htm . great informational site. Check out his headphone mods, pocket headphone amp, etc.

Sony MDR-EX70lp Fontopia Ear-bud headphones. They are around $40 and sound great. You won't have to look like a weirdo with huge headphones.

Probably Koss KSC-35 or KSC-50. However, if you have cash to burn, I hear the Sony MDR-D66SL headphones run well on a portable source and have extremely good sound reproduction. Minidisco.com has them for ~$150, I think.

To me, the loss of imaging is greater detriment to sound reproduction than the difference between $20 headphones and $2,000 headphones. That is why I hate headphones. however, you can buy portable amplifiers which add in the crosstalk and Head transfer function which will allow you to hear stereo with your head phones. Some popular ones are made by a company called headroom:

How good are the Koss UR-40's. I picked up a brand new pair on Ebay for $34.95 and want to know what to expect.

Koss KSC-35 may still be available. They were gonna do a last production run this week.

Etymotic

They make a few different models ranging from 130 - 250. I've heard for ear buds these are about as good as they get.
I myself also like the Bang & Olufsen A8's, although alot of audiophiles dont think too highly of B&O. They sound great but lack some low end, but damn they fit VERY nicely.

I second a try at Etys, the E6s are the "lower end' model, even tho they're still amazing. Even tho other buds didn't fit your ears, I still suggest giving the Etys a try if you can...they come with different sets of plugs in order to achieve the suction they need in the canal.

i had a pair of portapros... got them at the sale when koss had them at half off. i didnt think they were impressive until i listened to my other friends' headphones....wow, TOTALLY blew them away. theyre still going for 35$ at amazon with free shipping, btw. as good as they sound, theyre quite ugly. theyre not unbearable by any means, but not the most attractive headphones. theyre alot smaller than they look in pictures, so its not that bad. i just didnt like them because i dont like headphones--the bands get in the way of my ear.

i sold them for a pair of Koss KSC-35

these use the same drivers as the KSC-50, but its almost unanimously agreed that these sound way better...and, most of the time, better than the Porta Pros. theyre earclips ..essentially the exact same ones from the portapros but just with clips for your ear..theyre supposed to fit alot better than the ksc-50s, too. you can get them for 29.99$ from koss.com

as far as all the other headphones mentioned here...they sound worse. the grado sr-80 are good, and i really want a pair, but theyre larger, more expensive, and not as portable.

lastly, if you want earphones, get sennheiser mx500... theyre 15$ shipped from newegg

Wow, I never realised how highly rated the Koss KSC-35s were. I've been looking around for some new portable headphones and needless to say, I just bought a pair from koss.com.

Yeah I have a pair, and they're outstanding. Only negative is it's easy for other people to hear them, so you wouldn't really want to use them with other people around if you're trying to be nice.

What? Where did that idea come from?

Am I crazy, but I know I've had plenty of heard plenty of channel seperation while wearing headphones. In fact, I just tried a sound test right now.

He must be crazy, in fact the L/R separation drives me nuts on some Beatles tracks and Jazz tracks - must. get. crossfeed.
