Panasonic discontinued the TH50PX60U? When did that happen? Any idea how long one can probably expect stores to continue to sell this model? I'm hoping to pick up this TV in January, hopefully for about $2k even.

The word I used is "discounted", not "discontinued".

1. A 720P Plasma is not nearly as good as a computer monitor as the Westinghouse 47, if he plans on ever going that route, which is the reason I suggested this TV. I'm just trying to expand his options. Clearly if he wants something bigger than a flat panel he has already had other suggestions given in the area of DLP's.

His post was clearly about picture quality vs. computer monitor, and in that regard, I haven't seen anything that beats plasmas for PQ (yet).

Size does matter, but you can easily get a set that's too big for your room and viewing distance. Not quite sure something in the 50"+ range is good for a condo and the distance from the screen. There are formulas that can help you decide that.

For straight ahead picture quality, I still think Plasma rules. And from my personal experience with Panasonic, I'd have to say Panasonics rule!

Look for the THxxPX60U series. They have outstanding picture quality, 2 HDMI inputs, ATSC tuners (so you can get over the air digital/hdtv vs. needing to rely on a cable tuner).

These sets have just been discounted by Panasonic, and you can get them at great prices now.

(the "xx" in the model above reflects the three sizes in this family; 37", 42" and 50", so the model numbers would be TH37PX60U, TH42PX60U, and TH50PX60U.) The largest model, the 50", can now be obtained for under $2000 at some stores! But probably slightly over 2K at reputable stores on sale.

Go take a look at this family series at Best Buy. These sets also have very good progressive scan scalars for DVD playback. The internal progressive scan scalar looks better than my DVD player progressive scan output.

The "xx" model costs about $500 more just to get a tuner card.

I bought this: Link

I'm happy with it. I looked at a whole lot of TVs and I have to be honest... Plasma easily looked the best. DLP just didn't look as colorful (and it looked like crap unless you were looking straight at it). LCD just looked like absolute ass.

Just my opinion, but do yourself a favor and window shop like there's no tomorrow.

I love my 42" Westinghouse LCD (1080p)...got it for $1500 back in June. I would recommend this TV if you're not sitting too far back from the TV, and you can probably get the 47" version in your price range.

all costco tv's

This is what I have. I think it is a rebadged major brand, mayhaps a Sony. It has an excellent picture quality.

The AVSforum guys figured out last years model was a panasonic panel, I think the current one is from LG. I've been very happy with mine

Gotta go with another projector 😛

I wan't quite up into the $2000 range, but I got a Panasonic AE900U for $1499 add ~$100 for the screen I'm making.

Not 1080p like some of the other smaller options listed, but certainly able to better deliver the theater experience.

I hope you're thinking about sound too

Westinghouse 47 Inch LCD. 1080p(great as a TV and especially as a computer monitor)
Has 1 HDMI, 2 DVI and 2 Component inputs that all do high def. Also it can be found B&M at Best Buy.
If you have ever considered hooking a Computer up to your TV this is by far your best option IMO.

Although I highly recommend Crutchfield for online orders, and even more than B&M. They are way more professional and helpful than best buy could dream of, including on returns and warranty disputes. Honestly Crutchfield may be the best online store I have ever shopped at. Their support is fantastic.

Overall id suggest you goto http://www.avsforum.com if you really want to learn about the best TV purchase for you.

Ive heard Westing House puts out complete Garbage on a whole. Is this true?

Yeah Im with you, but I dont see anywhere in our condo to setup a projector, I mean those things do 8ft+ screens easy.

I was looking at one that was on a 100inch drop down screen at best buy and I was seriously drooling! I just dont see myself being able to set one of these up properly in any room, plus the gf doesnt want one in the livng room so it would have to be in the back bedroom, which means I would have to rearange the room, moving the guest bed and or using it in the arrangment, but I suppose you really need those nice movie theater seats.

I just have mine on a stand. It's kind of lame looking, but I'm sure you could find something pretty to put it on.

I'm at 102" and only about a ~11 or 12 foot throw.

No movie theater seats in here 😛

That's way down on my list after we stop moving every year

either a NICE 1080p lcd tv...or something from costco.

best way to go is some 1080p lcd/plasma tv from costco, so if it breaks, return it. 100% guaranteed, no questions asked full refund.

Heh, whoops. 😱

any opinions on the 1080p 47" polaroid flm-4701? I realize no tuner, but if you're using digital cable, you're renting a box from your cable company anyway. at $1698 from walmart, it seems like a pretty good deal, but I can't find any reviews of it.
