What has Gray Davis done to be recalled?

What problems has he created, rather than inherit since his term began that makes him deserving of a recall?

To the extent the problems in California can be blamed on the Governer, Gray is the man. He's been there long enough to take ownership of the issues.

The primary beef is that he misrepresented the conditions in the state when he ran for re-election, under the assumption that if anyone know how disastrous state finances were they would not have voted for the incumbent.

All that is just for discussion purposes, however. Recall is not impeachment and in California, like most states, if the voters don't like the color of his hair, that's basis for recall if enough people sign the petitions.

Didn't he promise to build a crapload of new power plants during the power crisis? I heard that not a one has gone online even now.

davis was overly dependant on silicon valley paying the bills, when the dotcom bubble burst as expected (though apparently davis did not), davis' expensive programs still remain causing our $30+ billion state deficit. u'd have to be a pretty bad gov. to manage to overspend a state budget by a whole $30 bil

He should be tried for treason and summarly executed. He took bribes from power cos to deregulate in such a way power co's could make a fortune at the tax payers expense. He increased prisons and prison gairds saleries while cutting education and teachers pay. He allowed spending to get out of control.

Yup.

Basically spent WAY too much and put ourselves into long term contracts that we can't get out of now. So when Silicon Valley burst, the $30 billion deficit was created.

So what can we do now? Nothing really. Overspent + long term contracts = Gray Davis trying to place the blame on others and whine for assistance from the Federal Government.

The recall won't solve any problems, we're still going have to cut A LOT money from many areas no matter what, but I can't imagine him being governor for several more years.

I haven't paid a whole lot of attention but it seems fiscal incompetence is the key. I think the claim is he way played down the money crisis in the state during the last election cycle....after which the true numbers came out.

So, maybe he wouldn't have been re-elected if his admin had honestly told the state of affairs during the campaign.

He seems to be a turd either way.

All those power plants weren't/aren't necessary. We buy a great deal of energy from outside sources already.
The energy budget deficit hit largely due to power brokers *cough*Enron*cough* that gouged the state by hoarding the energy supply and extorting the state.

Gray has done nothing wrong in trying to govern the state (at least nothing major in my opinion).

As for the alternative, had Bill Simon been elected, the state would be in perpetual servitude to big business (more than it already is).

The people of California need to take more responsiblility in this state. Prop 13 needs to be repealed. It's sick how property owners and ignorant petition-signers managed to get away with this law.
The state's education would be in the top 10 instead of the bottom 10 nation-wide had it not been for this notorious law that did nothing but cripple the California budget since it was passed.

Whew. Sorry if I sounded too preachy, but I just wanted to speak my mind on this issue which is sensitive to me.

If we could retroactively recall Wilson too I think we'd be set. Davis is the biggest asshat though.

As far as that 5 reasons website goes, #3 the internet tax... is that essentially a double sales tax? Silliness.

And to whoever said something about him relying too much on the silicon valley cash, yes this is true, but CA (along w/ a multitude of other states) also suffers from dependance on Tobacco lawsuits, and now that all that cash has about dried up they don't know where to look for more revenue.

EDIT: Unfortunately, the whole recall effort is more than likely a waste of time.

No.... it is tax on sales that occur in the state. Just like any purchase in a store that is subject to sales tax.

Davis indeed misrepresented the current (and future) status of state coffers but his offense is no different from what Bush does. The people of CA should certainly recall Davis but the same people pushing this agenda give Bush kudos for identical offenses (poor spending priorities, cooked books, etc).

If I buy something from Newegg I already pay sales tax on it. How is that not a double sales tax then?

Nothing new here. GOP once again protects the interests of market manipulating energy companies over those of the consumers in Western states.

New egg charges sales tax. They, I believe, are CA. located. The new law proposal would cause everyone to be like New egg.. Monarch in Georga does not charge sales tax. But, it they sold into CA. they would, as I read it, charge tax (because it was shipped to CA.) and remit to CA. New Egg would not charge any more tax than what they already do.

If God had intended for Davis to be recalled, he would do it himself -

Why wasn't there any warning about the huge budget crisis? How can the CA government pretend like they woke up one morning and all of a sudden this huge deficit appeared out of nowhere? That's basically the way I heard about it... turned on the news one day and learned we have a $30-some billion dollar budget crisis. I'm sure they knew about this earlier and they could have planned accordingly, slowly cutting back funding instead of running around idiotically like chickens with their heads off. All of a sudden we hear: "OMG! Budget crisis, we need to do something: cut back funding to schools, increase tuitions, triple DMV registration fees!"

Don't hesitate to call me ignorant if I've just been under a rock and the budget crisis was public knowledge earlier than a few months ago (when I started hearing this crap).

What has Gray Davis done to be recalled?
Maybe the question should be: what has he done to solve California's problems?

This man is behind the recall, and could very well be the Republican governor of california if the recall goes through.
