from a technical aspect, which console has the ability to produce better graphics?

what about in actualy games, pitting the best graphical games on each system vs each other?
GT4 (PS2) vs... ? (Wii)

The Wii has somewhere around three times the graphics capability of the PS2.

my ignorance is showing.
i was remembering how awesome looking GT4 was for its time, and comparing it to Wii Sports/Fit and thinking to myself how shitty it looked. i thought it was going to be closer.

In terms of hardware potential, the Wii is way past the PS2. Hell even the GameCube was more powerful than the PS2. The Wii is supposedly even a little better than the original Xbox. However, that doesn't count for much considering the lack of graphical quality of the Wii's games. There are a lot of GameCube games that actually look better than most Wii games. And there are a lot of horrible Wii games that look like something you might get on an N64 or PS1.

I remember playing Rogue Squadron on the GameCube. It was a launch title - came out in late 2001. Yet it looks better than most Wii games. Obviously there are a few Wii games that really push the system, but not many. Most look like crap.

LOL? Game cube had better graphics than the PS2?!!??!?! You must have never touched FFXII, the game leaves some current gen games to SHAME. Not to mention GT4, that thing destroyed any racing game on 360 at the time, and even still today, is the standard for driving simulation. I'll post some pics i took using the in-game camera.

P.s. I'm not talking about the cut scenes.

Gamecube had a faster processor and faster GPU than ps2, I believe. PS2 had more RAM or something.

Here we go: http://www.popularmechanics.com/technology/gadgets/1278831

"When it comes to the actual specs, the Xbox is the most powerful with a 733-MHz processor, leaving PS2 and GameCube in the dust at 295 and 485 MHz, respectively."

"The GameCube's graphics processor is 162 MHz compared with PS2's 147 MHz."
The xbox has a 233 MHz.

I was just talking about the hardware itself. The PS2 was definitely the least powerful in most respects. Then again, it also had the biggest and probably the best game catalog and the developers really squeezed the maximum possible performance out of its hardware. The GameCube, on the other hand, was frequently criticized for not having a big enough game catalog.

As long as we're bringing up examples, though, I may as well point out a counterexample - Resident Evil 4 was available on the GameCube and then on the PS2, and the GC version was graphically superior.

Yup the Gamecube had much more powerful hardware but it didn't get utilized as well since like you said, less people made games for it.

The gamecube is dead, and the wii, nothing more than a kids/grandma gaming console. PS2 was way ahead from the start no matter what. As far as RE4 and that pokemon game(whatever it was called, something lugia), i doubt there are any other games that can match several titles on the PS2.

I'm wrong? OK

Hey buddy, breaking news!!!

It took Forza three different releases to catch up to GT4 and it still hasn't sold as many copies as either GT3(14m) or GT4(12m).:hmm:

Oh! and here you go, just to show ya i'm not pulling numbers out of my "fanboy" ass.

Well, would you look at that, looks like you folks are right about 45m copies behind GT all time...ouch.

Thanks for coming by.

Because the sales of a game has anything at all to do with the graphics performance of a console. By your logic the Wii is more powerful than the PS3.

I just thought it was funny that the title of the thread involves a Sony and Nintendo system. It had nothing to do with the 360, but here you are making a broad generalization about how much better GT4 was compared to all racers on the 360, and the only thing you had to back it up is sales numbers.

Hell, I find it funny that he stated...

"Not to mention GT4, that thing destroyed any racing game on 360 at the time"

...when GT4 was released 10 months before the XBOX 360 even launched. THEN he tries to back up his statement by showing shots from the photo-mode, which is the mode that renders the pictures after the fact...not at all conclusive of in-game graphics.

There was nothing to compare GT4 to in the Wii, therefore i made the reference to Forza on Xbox...

Photo mode images are taken using the game's graphic engine...
