Both games have been pushed back and will be pushed back again. I won't be surprised if they both hit the market for the xmas rush in '04.

A coworker told me last week that he plans to purchase an ATI 9800 Pro, a 3 GHz P4 and new mobo just to run Doom 3.

I've got about a 1 1/2 year upgrade cycle I go through and everytime I upgrade I end up spending about $300-$400. Mind you it's not the best or the fastest , but I'm always able to use all apps and play ALL games very well. I make sure the hardware I get doesn't let me miss out on "cool" new features for at least a few months.... damnit I'm overdue for an upgrade!!! oooh the itch oooch the itch. But gonna wait until the summer... :(

Crazy.
Why did YOU upgrade your system? If I were to upgrade my AthlonXP1600/GF4200, it would improve the performance of everything, not just HL2. I'm sure many on this board upgrade for no good reason--That's why they're enthusiasts :)

When you install the game, it detected that I had a Ti4600 and said that I had to install 41.xx drivers or else I would see gray lines on my monitor. First time I installed it I just blew that off, but when I ran the game, all I saw were giant black and gray lines flickering... no game at all. A lazy search didn't find the 41.xx drivers on the net, so I just reinstalled the game and let the beta install the drivers for me. Then it worked.

I actually am co-inciding my computer upgrades with the release of Doom3.

However, I currently have a P2-450 with RivaTNT video card. I figure I'll build a new computer 6 months after the release of Doom3. That way the prices for the hardware that will be released in the same time frame of Doom3 will fall down....and I can buy it for cheap (hopefully).

So yes, Doom3 is influencing my computer upgrade decisions.

Buying hardware now to run a game that isn't even out is a dumb idea. Especially with so many hardware changes coming up (PCI Express, DDR-II, etc).

Yes, it will matter. Even though Carmack is using OpenGL instead of D3D 9 for graphics, it doesn't change what features cards do and don't support, since most features exposed in D3D are also exposed in OpenGL, and as you can imagine, Carmack is likely to use anything he can get his hands on. A DX8 card running Doom 3 will be just as crippled as a DX8 card running HL2(D3D based). Besides, we're also forgetting that Doom 3 will use DirectX for input and sound, so one way or another, you're going to have to have DX9 installed.;)

They might just be wanting to upgrade, and they are using Doom 3 as a baseline for that.

Who knows but I still think from what I have seen, the Doom engine is more complex then that of the Source engine.

Will it really matter? Depends what "matter" means to you. An older card will be slower but it should display all the video effects so you can't compare it to HL2 running on a GF4.

Yea thats what I was thinking. Carmack is the king of OpenGL, why would he switch to an inferior API...
