What hardware should I buy to run Doom 3?

People who ask this crack me up. They are talking about spending a few hundred dollars to play one video game. A game that they aren't even sure they'll like!

Crazy.

I saw a guy ahead of me in line at Best Buy with two Radeon 9800 Pro retail boxes and two Star Wars Galaxies Special Edition boxes on opening day of the game's release.

I have. I've played the Doom 3 beta too. It's one hell of a scary game. It's going to be GOOD. Even the BETA looks freaking gorgeous.

I thought you were really asking. I usually tell people they have to wait for Tejas and the Radeon 12000 pro.

D3 & HL2 might be out by then.

FFMCobalt,

How did the game run? What res did you run it at and what framerate did you get? Did you miss anything out of the Ti line (what I have also) not being being direct x 9 compliant?

Minimum Specs for this are:
P4 EE or AMD Athlon 64
2gb of PC4400 Ram
Radeon 9800XT 256mb or Geforce FX5950Ultra 256mb
:p

1) Quite smoothly @ either 1280x960 or 1280x1024. I can't remember which
2) See answer #1 and there's no demo to run to see frame rates that easily. I didn't play with it long enough to figure out how to get frame rates displayed, if it's even possible at this point. It's only a beta2.
3) What are you talking about? The Ti4600 not being Dx9.0b compliant? It is... Or am I missing something... Clerify?

YASFPS

yet another stupid first person shooter...
we will see...very unlikey that ANY game could live up against the hype which is made about D3.....

I've see too many games which were hyped incredibly before release...and once they went gold it turned out there was nothing to it.

The GF4's are not DX9 hardware. They work fine with DX9, but on the hardware level, they are only DX8 cards. You don't get some of the new features DX9 includes unless you pick up a DX9 card...like the ATI 9600/9700/9800, or some if the new Nvidia cards.

:)

I hope doom has some new features that have never been seen before in video games. I won't upgrade my sys for this, I have no problem running in 800x600 which should run fine with cheapo geforce fx5200. I hope it's as cool as when I played the first doom game...I remember I was blown away because it was the first FPS that I played with a stairs in the game play and multiple floors in the game map, made wolfenstien 3d look like a peice of crap.

Roger that!

The way things seem to be shaping up, if the marketers aren't completely putting us on:

nVidia for Doom III
ATi for HL2

(Although it shouldn't REALLY make a big difference)

Anyway, as much as I like nVidia, it looks like I'll be buying an ATi card come summer... :)

BTW, sure it's hundreds of dollars to play one game. But you forget that an upgrade will benefit other games as well. My (somewhat uneducated) guess is that if you can run Doom III well, you should be able to run any next-generation title smoothly.

yup I'm planning for a major system upgrade/rebuild this summer in anticipation of the many next Gen games coming out. My Xp1700+ and GF4 Ti is actually starting to feel..... sluggish!!:Q

I'm jumping ship and going Ati as my next card.....

pretty much irrelevant isn't it, that HL2>Doom3

so change the OP Title to What hardware should I buy to run HL2? and the point is still the same.

Correct. What's your point?

Personally, I just wanted to contribute some of my thoughts on the issue.

my point is probably directed at shockwave. that his post HL2>Doom3 is irelevant to the OP.

DX9 shouldn't matter in the case of Doom 3, since it's written in OpenGL.
