fried a 1ghz duron once (I'm pretty sure it was a 600 I had clocked to 1Ghz). This is when I found out that cpus can not run w/o a cooling device of sort attached (even if only for a few seconds).

Only thing I have ever fried was my xbox's hard drive and my cathodes seem to not like me. And I have dealt with a lot of hardware.

I've killed one mobo, but my daughter must have dark cloud hanging over her computer.

2 mobo's
1 cpu
2 sticks of ram
2 vid cards

And, I don't know how many times I had reload Win98, things are better now that she has XP, but she thinks I don't know how to build computers.

Nobody else ever has any problems.

I had a PSU die.
But the only thing I've ever killed was my Epox 8KHA+.
Let's just say:
poorly designed heatsink clip + screwdriver = DEAD MOBO

Other than that, I've had pretty good luck. As much as people hate Compaq, my Presario K6-2 380 that I bought around 1997 or 98 still runs perfectly will all original hardware.

A stick of RAM, didn't have it inserted into the mobo all the way and it burnt (literally) when I powered the system up

The worst part is that I had heard all the stories about people doing this so I was trying really hard to be careful.

then only one that was my fault was just a floppy - I installed a new psu, and when plugging in the floppy's power molex, accidentally only plugged it into three of the pins instead of 4. Booted up, lots of sparks and the wires just seemed to start burning, kinda like in movies when they light a fuse and it just takes off. It started heading back to my power supply, but luckily I got to it before it managed to hit the actual supply. My computer smelt like burnt rubber (since the wires were insulated) for weeks. Luckily I just had to wrap up the ruined cable in electrical tape, and the others still work fine.

I've had a couple hd's and a cpu fan die, but those weren't my fault.

One lousy 17" monitor died on me but it was $69 and it did last 2.5 years and was on for hours at a time. It was also placed in a wood cabinet that trapped the heat inside so it basically just slowly melted inside.

Everything else is still working great......knock on wood!

Tips:

1. Always unplug the computer before making hardware changes.
2. Always check the heatsink is properly installed a few times before putting the case panel back on.
3. Use a decent power supply
4. Use a UPC.....house current is really bad in some areas.

The only thing I have ever purposely killed in my computer has been ... well, not in my computer. I shoot sh|t up at the range. However, I've had a HDD, video card, single stick of 16MB ram, and two sound cards die for no reason on me.

yeah... 5 of 7 were user error... the other two were just mysterious deaths...

At least you never killed one of those 1700+'s :p

What was the highest you ever got with one anyways? I still have mine chugging away at 12x200.

Oh yea... I'm almost sure I killed a recently recapped Abit VP6... I have no clue how. It just never booted back up.
