What hardware changes require clean OS install?

I know it's best to do it in conjuction with a new MB install, but what about when replacing a processor or switching the MB (and HD) to a new case?

Without knowing what OS you're talking about, it's impossible to answer this question.

Assuming Windows 2000/XP, as long as the same HAL and disk controller driver can be used for both the "before" and "after" cases, you should be good to go.

The OS is totally ignorant of the case. Moving the hardware to a new case will not require a reinstall.

A new processor won't require a reinstall in any cases that I'm aware of.

Yeah, I have had the same experience. Changed motherboard, CPU without reinstalls.

oops, here's the specs:

Epox 8KHA+
xp 1800+ (stock hsf)
Antec sx830
256MB DDR
Maxtor 40GB/7200
Visiontek GF3 Ti200
Win ME/2000 dual boot

Still in the Win2k 'weening process' so ME stays till I feel more comfortable. But if it makes a big difference in changeability options, I can kick ME to the curb (or burn it like some here would suggest).

Thinking about moving to an Antec sx635 for space saving. Future changes could be swapping chips, or upgrading the HSF if I decide to OC in the future.

Thanks
